The Lindenwood men's basketball team led for all but 13 seconds in a 74-73 win over Quincy in Quincy, Ill., on Saturday afternoon. The win was the second in a row for the Lions and it evened the team's record at 2-2.
The contest started slowly for Quincy and the Lions took advantage of it. The Hawks missed their first three shots while Lindenwood made its first three to take a quick lead. The Lions continued to add to the lead pushing their advantage up to 17 with just over five minutes to play in the opening half.
Quincy did chip away at its deficit and with a layup with 16 seconds to go in the first half the Hawks trailed by just eight heading into the locker room.
The second half started the opposite as the the first half for the Hawks. The home team started on a 15-7 run to tie up the score 45. Over the next 15 minutes, the teams would trade baskets back-and-forth but the Lions would never surrender the lead. But unfortunately for Lindenwood the lead would never get more than three.
With just over a minute to play in the game, Godson Eneogwe would hit a three-pointer for Quincy to tie up the score. After
Darris Smith turned the ball over with 34 seconds to play Quincy took the lead for the first time all day after a pair of free throws.
The lead for the home team did not last long as
Chanse Creekmur hit a three pointer right in front of the LIndenwood bench with just 13 seconds to play. Quincy had one final chance at the win but
Sam Mader blocked the potential game winning jumper and the Lions held on for the win.
Not only did Mader block the final shot of the game he led Lindenwood with 14 points and in rebounds with six.
Cory Arentsen was second on the team in scoring with 13 points while
Nick Van Osdale chipped in with 12.
The Lions shot 46 percent from the field and 50 percent from behind the three-point line. Lindenwood won the rebounding battle 40-31 including a 15-10 margin on the offensive glass.
The Lions will be back in action on Wednesday night at the Hyland Arena against Illinois-Springfield.
