The Lindenwood baseball team defeated Missouri S&T 7-5 in a comeback victory in game one but fell 3-2 in the second game on Tuesday afternoon.
Wes Degener started off game one with a single to left, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error. After the spark
Nathan Prindle pelted a two-run blast over the left field wall to put Lindenwood up 2-0. The Lions committed three costly errors in the bottom of the inning allowing Missouri S&T to take the lead 3-2 after the first inning.
The Miners added to its lead with a run in the bottom of the third.Â
Vince Saladino helped Lindenwood get a run back in the top of the fourth with a two-out double down the right field line to score
Wade Rothermich. The back-and-forth game continued as Missouri S&T again took a two-run lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth.Â
Mike Wilson singled in the top of the sixth and later scored on a wild pitch to bring the Lions within one run.
Down to its last out in the final inning, Lindenwood kept fighting. Rothermich tripled to center and scored on a Wilson double to left center to tie the game at 5-5. Saladino came through in the clutch with a double to left field and drove in Wilson to give Lindenwood its first lead since the first inning.Â
Paul Sherwood added an insurance run by driving in Saladino on a single to centerfield. In the bottom of the inning, junior
Devin Breihan had a strong 1-2-3 inning to cement the 7-5 come-from-behind victory for the Lions.
Game two began in similar fashion with Lindenwood jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Lions scored their run on a
Michael Bibbs sacrifice bunt allowing Degener to score. The Miners scored in the bottom of the second and again in the third to take a 2-1 lead.Â
The Lions were able to tie the game at 2-2 in the fifth inning on a wild pitch but fell behind again in the bottom of the inning. Lindenwood could not recover from the one-run deficit and fell 3-2 in the second game.
With the weekday split the Lions move to 6-11 on the year. The Lions will host MIAA opponent Northeastern State for a four-game series starting Friday at 4 p.m. at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
