Bibbs' Walk-off Hit Upsets No. 21 Washburn

The Lindenwood baseball team upset No. 21 Washburn on Friday afternoon on a walk-off hit by Michael Bibbs in extra innings to win 10-9.

The Lions fell behind 2-0 in the second inning and surrendered six more runs in the top of the fifth inning to fall behind 8-0.  Lindenwood responded in the bottom of the inning by putting the ball in play and making the Washburn defense work to get out of the inning.  Zac Perkins started the inning with a single and moved to second on a fielding error by the Ichabods.  Nathan Prindle reached base on a fielder's choice and in the process Perkins went the third and Wes Degener moved to second on another Washburn error.

Wade Rothermich put the Lions on the board with a two-RBI double scoring Perkins and Degener and moved Prindle to third.  Ryan Light drove in Prindle with an RBI single and Michael Bibbs followed with an RBI single of his own to bring the Lions within four runs.  Another big double by Mike Wilson brought the Lions within two runs after five innings of play.

The Ichabods scored a run in the top of the sixth to go up by three but the Lions fought back again in the bottom of the inning.  Degener led off the bottom of the frame with a solo shot over the left field wall.  Prindle drew a walk and Rothermich hit a double down the right field line to put both runners in scoring position.  Prindle scored on a ground out to second by Drew Quinones which allowed Rothermich to move up to third in the process.  Light drove in Rothermich on a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 9-9 after six innings.

Three scoreless innings forced the game to head into extra frames.  Devin Breihan held the Ichabods in the top of the tenth and Prindle hit a double to start the bottom of the inning to spark the Lions offense.  Rothermich was intentionally walked to bring up Quinones with no one out.  Quinones hit the ball deep enough to get both runners up one more base on his sacrifice fly forcing the Ichabods to intentionally walk Light and load the bases.  Bibbs came to the plate with a mission as he swung out of his shoes on the first pitch but waited for a pitch later in the at-bat and drove the ball through the infield for the game winning hit.

The extra-inning thriller improves the Lions overall record to 12-14 and 6-7 in the MIAA.  The Lions will continue their series with the Ichabods on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
