Baseball Rides Offense to Wednesday Sweep over Christian Brothers

The Lindenwood baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Christian Brothers on Wednesday afternoon by winning game one 8-4, and a 11-9 win in game two.

Game one featured runs scored in five of the seven innings played.  The Lions opened up the first inning scoreless, while Christian Brothers jumped out to a quick lead in the first inning with a two-run home run to centerfield.  Lindenwood answered back in the next frame as Sam Baxter opened up the top of the second inning with a single through the left side of the infield.  Mike Ehrhard followed with a single to center to put runners at first and second with no outs.

After Ehrhard was picked off first base, Rayce Singbush hit a double to centerfield to drive in Baxter, resulting in a 2-1 deficit.  Ryan Sosnowski took the next pitch up the middle for a single to put runners at the corners with just one out, but the Lions could not tack on more runs.

Christian Brothers piled on two more runs in the bottom of the third to extend its lead to 4-1.  The Lions put together a huge inning in the top of the fourth.  Baxter was hit by a pitch and moved to second on an Ehrhard single down the right field line.  Both runners moved up after Sosnowski was plunked to load the bases, and Jake Cooper drove in two runs on a double to left field.  Paul Sherwood came up to the plate with a one-run deficit and runners in scoring position, as a single to center field drove in two runs to give Lindenwood the 5-4 lead.  Wes Degener drew a walk and Nathan Prindle pelted a double down the left field line to drove in Sherwood for the two-run lead.  The big inning gave Lindenwood a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth frame.

The Lions had a chance to increase their lead in the top of the fifth inning with runners on second and third with one out.  Christian Brothers intentionally walked Cooper to load the bases, and the strategy paid off as the Pirates were able to get an inning-ending double play.  Connor Law finished his day with five innings pitched, with six strikeouts, and allowed just two earned runs on three hits.

Lindenwood added more runs in the top of the seventh with a two-out rally started by Singbush.  After the first two batters were retired, Singbush singled to third, stole second, and scored on a Sosnowski single up the middle to give the Lions a 7-4 lead.  Degener drew a bases-loaded walk to tack on another insurance run heading into the bottom of the seventh.  Devin Breihan came in to relive Brenden Kleekamp who tossed a scoreless sixth inning with two strikeouts.  Breihan had a similar stat line as he threw the final inning of the game without allowing a run and tallied two strikeouts.  Lindenwood defeated Christian Brothers 8-4 in game one of the doubleheader.

Singbush set a spark to game two after a first-inning grand slam put Lindenwood up 4-0 immediately.  Degener came to the plate with bases loaded, but a four-pitch walk brought in just one run, and the Lions would close out the first inning with a 5-0 lead.  In the top of the second, Sosnowski hit the gap in right-center for a double to bring in Ehrhard and Baxter.  Michael Bibbs scored on a sacrifice fly by Vince Saladino to give Lindenwood a larger lead.

Christian Brothers scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to get back in the game, but Lindenwood continued to stay dominate at the plate.  The Lions picked up two more runs in the third inning after three consecutive hits by Baxter, Ehrhard, and Singbush put Lindenwood up 10-4.  Again, the Pirates jumped back in the game with five runs in the bottom of the third to cut the Lindenwood lead to just 10-9.  Degener scored an insurance run in the top of the fifth to put Lindenwood up 11-9, and in the sixth inning the game was called due to darkness.

Singbush had a stellar day at the plate by going 5-for-7 with three doubles, one home run, six RBI, and a 1.571 slugging percentage.  Ehrhard went 4-for-7 on the day with two doubles and three runs scored.  Sosnowski rounded out the key players by going 3-for-6 with three RBI, three runs scored, and one double.

Lindenwood improves to 4-0 on the season after the doubleheader sweep.  The Lions will play their home opener on Saturday against Augustana (S.D.) for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
