The No. 3 ranked Lindenwood women's lacrosse team fell to the No. 11 ranked Florida Southern Mocs 10-9 in overtime on Thursday evening from Bryant Stadium in Lakeland, Fla.
For the second time in as many games, the Lady Lions began slowly, again allowing the first four goals, falling behind their opponent 4-0. Florida Southern scored its first goal at the 27:58 mark of the opening half, and would extend the lead to four goals with 13:18 remaining in the first half of play. It was at that moment that
Maddi Ossello converted on a free position attempt, making the score 4-1 in favor of the Mocs. Ossello would find the back of the net 69 seconds later off of a feed from
Rachel Benzing, drawing the Lady Lions closer at 4-2. Benzing would tally an unassisted goal with 10:19 remaining in the half, as Lindenwood continued to cut into the Florida Southern lead.
Hannah Doughty helped draw the Lady Lions even, scoring with just over seven minutes showing on the clock. The game would remain even at 4-4 until
Amanda Schimpke scored with one-second remaining in the half, sending Lindenwood ahead 5-4 after 30 minutes of play.
Sophie Buelow was credited with the assists on the final two Lady Lion goals of the half.
After 5:50 of even play to begin the second half, Florida Southern tied the score at 5-5, behind an unassisted Meghan O'Brien goal. Doughty would put the Lady Lions back in front 6-5, with her second goal of the evening at the 19:50 mark of the half. The Mocs rallied with two consecutive goals from O'Brien, reclaiming the lead 7-6 with 9:58 to play. The Lady Lions responded, tying the game at 7-7, as Benzing tallied her second goal of the game at the 8:21 mark. Lindenwood would score two of the next three goals, taking a 9-8 lead into the final minute of regulation. However, the Mocs scored with 38 seconds remaining, evening the score at 9-9, and sending the two teams into a sudden death overtime period.
After securing the draw control to begin the three-minute overtime period, the Lady Lions failed to convert on their first possession. The Mocs took control of the ball, drove the length of the field, and used O'Brien's fifth goal of the game to secure a 10-9 overtime victory.
In the cage for Lindenwood,
Delaney Solomon turned in a career-high 15 saves. Solomon led the Lady Lions with five ground balls.
Shannon Modl caused a team-high two turnovers, while
Erin Abbott secured a team-best four draw controls.
For the game, Florida Southern held the edge in shots (30-20), shots on goal (25-17), and draw controls (11-10). Lindenwood finished play scooping up 22 ground balls to the Mocs' 16.
Following the overtime loss, Lindenwood moves its record to 10-2 on the season. With the victory, Florida Southern sees its record improve to 8-3. The Lady Lions will conclude their three-game non-conference road trip on Saturday afternoon with a matchup versus the Saint Leo Lions. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. from Saint Leo, Fla.
