Baseball Hangs on for 5-4 Win Over Missouri S&T

The Lindenwood baseball team defeated Missouri S&T 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.

The Miners began the game with a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first after the Lions allowed just one hit, but a costly error resulted in both runs being unearned.  Lindenwood responded in the bottom of the inning that started with a Wes Degener walk.  Drew Quinones came to the plate two batters later and drove the ball to left field resulting in a fielding error.  Quinones moved to third on the play and Degener scored to cut the deficit in half.  Mike Ehrhard brought in Quinones after a groundout to third base to tie the game at 2-2.

Andrew Eilers pitched a great game after the first inning, as his day ended with six innings pitched, six hits allowed, and just two runs allowed.  The Lions produced more runs in the bottom of the third inning after the inning began with the first three batters reaching base.  Ehrhard drove in Degener on a base hit, and Sam Baxter hit into a double play, but Perkins was able to cross the plate.  Rayce Singbush drove in Quinones from third base on a two-out double to give the Lions a 5-2 lead.

Missouri S&T scored two runs in the top of the seventh to make it a slim 5-4 Lindenwood lead, but Devin Breihan came in and shut the door.  Breihan pitched the final 2.1 innings, struck out three batters, and did not allow a hit, as he earned his second save of the season.  The Lindenwood offense tallied eight hits on the day, but the eight runners left on base proved to be a more productive day at the plate than the previous week.

The win bumps Lindenwood up to 8-6 on the year.  The Lions will travel to Kearney, Neb. to take on Nebraska-Kearney in a three-game MIAA series beginning on Friday at 2 p.m.
