The No. 2 women's lacrosse used a balanced attack on Saturday night in Gaffney, S.C. to defeat No. 7 Limestone, 16-8. The victory extended its winning streak to 15 games, a program record to begin a season. Lindenwood scored eight goals in each half, and had four players score three or more goals.
It took four minutes for Lindenwood to score, but once it did it was only 57 seconds before the score was 2-0.
Rachel Benzing returned to the lineup to assist on the first of four
Cassie Stucklen goals, before
Maria Johnson made her presence known with her first of three tallies.
After Limestone cut the lead in half, Lindenwood rattled off six straight goals in the final 16 minutes of the first half. Stucklen and Benzing hooked up again midway through the half to make the score 3-1.
Allison Hurley and
Hannah Doughty knotched goals 37 seconds apart to give Lindenwood a 5-1 lead, before Johnson scored consecutive goals just minutes later.
Hurley capped off the run with a goal on a free position attempt. Limestone added a goal with 48 seconds left in the half, and Lindenwood entered the break with an 8-2 lead.
After allowing a Limestone goal to open the second half, Benzing and Stucklen each scored an unassisted goal to gain a commanding 10-3 lead. The team exchanged goal for the next four scores, including tallies by
Remi Larson and Doughty before Hurley put another one in the back of the cage for her third and final goal of the night.
Right after Limestone made the score 13-6,
Rachel Ortell made a huge stop on a free position attempt to set up Stucklen's game-high fourth goal. Doughty scored again before Limestone added two more of its own, but Larson had the final say with her second goal to give Lindenwood the 16-8 win.
Hurley, Johnson, and Doughty each scored three goals in the win, as Hurley and Johnson also had two assists. Benzing led Lindenwood with three dimes, along with her lone tally.
Ortell made seven saves in the victory, while also scooping up eight groundballs. Erin Abbot,
Sophie Buelow, and
Shannon Modl had three groundballs apiece, while Buelow also had three draw controls. Abbot secured five draw controls on the night, now making her the all-time leader in program history with 174. Johnson also had five draw controls in the win.
The win improves Lindenwood to 15-0 on the season, and will continue its non-conference road trip on Monday when it battles No. 8 Queens in Charlotte, N.C. at 3 p.m.
