The Lindenwood men's tennis team picked up its first ever win against an NCAA Division I opponent on Sunday afternoon, as it defeated Eastern Illinois by a 6-1 score. The Lions earned their fourth dual victory of the season in Champaign, Ill.
Lindenwood opened the neutral-site match by having success during doubles play. The duo of
Naoufal El Idrissi and
Jonas Bergbom won a 6-4 decision at the No. 1 matchup, while
Michele Gaspari and
Guillaume Teste cruised to a 6-1 triumph at the No. 2 slot. By winning two of the three doubles matches, the Lions secured the best-of-three point.
Lindenwood continued its strong play in singles competition, taking five of the six decisions over Eastern Illinois. Bergbom and El Idrissi recorded victories at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.
Hector Horcajada and
Theo Butaeye posted straight-set wins out of the No. 4 and No. 5 spots, while Teste registered a three-set win out of the No. 6 matchup.
"Today was a very solid team performance," said tennis head coach
Nicolai Nonnenbroich. "We played our best doubles of the year at every spot. The guys are in a very good place mentally. We are showing consistent toughness and have learned how to win in tight situations. Tuesday's match will be another opportunity to continue improving our game."
Lindenwood will return to action on Tuesday afternoon for a dual match against Maryville. Start time is set for 12:00 p.m. from the Lindenwood tennis courts in St. Charles, Mo.
