Men's ACHA Division II ice hockey swept a two-game series from Maryville Saturday and Sunday at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri. The Lions outscored the Saints 17-6 over the weekend, winning the first game 7-4, aided by a
Chase McClellan hat trick, and taking the second by a final of 10-2.
The two teams traded goals in the opening frame on Saturday with McClellan netting the puck at 10:31 off a pass from
Praveen Dhaliwal before Maryville tied it six minutes later on a power play. Lindenwood took the lead for good at the 3:45 mark of the second when
Declan Carter and
Jack Radley set up
Eli Roofe, then
Stanley Lucas made it 3-1 Lions at 7:30 with help from
Josh Linn and
Jack Radley. After the Saints pulled back within one, McClellan scored his second of the contest, assisted by Radley and Linn at 15:51.
The third period was full of penalties and power play goals. McClellan completed his hat trick on the first of them at the 12:25 mark.
RJ Hart and
Nolan Kahl earned the helpers on the play that made it 5-2 Lions. The Saints scored the next two with the man-advantage to once again pull within a goal, but Lindenwood finished the game with the final two. Lucas and
Ryan Granville set up Linn for a power play goal with 3:17 remaining and Hart sounded the horn at 18:40, assisted by Dhaliwal and Carter.
The Lions outshot Maryville 58-20 and
Michael Errico stopped 16 of the 20 pucks he faced to earn the victory in goal. Lindenwood went 2/5 on the power play while the Saints were 3/6 on man-advantage opportunities.
The Lions dominated Maryville on Sunday, outshooting the Saints 61-14 and scoring the first six unanswered in the eight-goal victory. Eight different Lindenwood players hit the back of the net as the Lions scored four in the first period, two in the second, and another four in the final frame with three of those coming on the power play. The two Saints goals came back-to-back in the opening 97-seconds of the third.
Steve Avalone and Linn each scored twice for Lindenwood with Behnen,
Bradley Rupp, Granville, Kahn, Lucas, and Hart adding single tallies. Granville also led the Lions with three assists while Avalone, Radley, McMahon, Lucas, Stanley, and Wagner each earned two helpers. Behnen, McClellan,
Bryce Leger, and Linn each had one assist to help the Lindenwood cause.
Ethan Paulin-Hatch earned the win in goal with 12 saves on 14 shots. The Lions went 3/5 on the power play while holding Maryville scoreless on four man-advantage chances.
With the two victories, Lindenwood improved to 19-4-0. The Lions will travel eastward for three games at the Miami University (Ohio) Showcase January 20-22. Lindenwood will face Sault College at 5 p.m. on Friday, Florida Gulf Coast at 3:50 p.m. on Saturday, and Liberty University at 1:20 p.m. Sunday with all games taking place at the Goggin Ice Arena in Oxford, Ohio.
