After a slow start offensively, men's ACHA Division II ice hockey erupted for three unanswered goals in the second period on the way to a 5-1 victory over Weber State University at part of the Lindenwood Showcase Friday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
After a scoreless first,
Sam Watson struck just 27-seconds into the next frame on a play set up by
Brett Robinson and
Michael Mullen. Just over five minutes later, Watson sounded the horn again off a feed from
Jacob Behnen. The Wildcats had a power play opportunity in the latter stages of the period, but Mullen flipped the script and scored short-handed and unassisted at the 15:57 mark.
The Lions added another goal in the third off the blade of
Zac Maupin with help from
Austin Meers at 2:40 to make it 4-0. As the regulation game clock ticked below five-minutes, the Wildcats broke the shutout, but
Sean McMahon reestablished the four-goal margin when he split the pipes at 17:40, assisted by
Stanley Lucas and
Mason Kruger.
Lindenwood outshot Weber State 54-29 and
Ethan Paulin-Hatch stopped 28 of the 29 shots he faced to earn the win in goal.
With the victory, the Lions improved to 8-1 overall. They'll continue play in the Lindenwood Showcase with a game against Iowa Saturday evening at 8:30 p.m., followed by a contest against DePaul University Sunday afternoon at 3:45 p.m. at the Centene Community Ice Center.
