Men's ACHA Division II ice hockey swept all three games played at the Lindenwood Winter Classic by JOG January 12-14 at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
The Lions wrapped up the weekend with a 5-1 victory over Trine University Sunday afternoon. The two squads traded goals early before Lindenwood finished with the final four of the contest.
The first tally of the game came on the power play after a Thunder cross-checking penalty.
Sean McMahon and
Sam Watson connected with
Mason Kruger at the six-minute mark to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Trine tied it at 14:05 and it looked like the opening period would end 1-1, but
Jacob Behnen had other ideas. He stole the puck and beat the final buzzer by a second unassisted to give Lindenwood a 2-1 advantage.
The Lions added on in the second when
Logan Millhausen sounded the horn at 10:01 with help from
Brett Robinson and
Sean McMahon.
Ryan Granville made it 4-1 on a play set up by
Praveen Dhaliwal and
Eli Roofe at 15:26, and then Behnen netted his second of the game at 1:47 of the third, assisted by Roofe and
Chase McClellan.
Lindenwood outshot the Thunder 58-18 and
Ethan Paulin-Hatch stopped 17 of the 18 shots he faced to earn the victory in goal. The Lions went 1/4 on the power play while holding Trine scoreless on two chances.
Lindenwood began the weekend with a 12-1 win over Concordia University (Wisc.). All 12 goals for the Lions came at even strength in a game that featured just three penalties. Robinson led Lindenwood with five points on a goal and four assists.
Zac Maupin earned four points on a pair of goals and two assists while
Austin Meers matched that effort on a goal and three assists. McClellan totaled three points with two goals and an assist while
Gage Vierzba had three assists.
Anthony Tinsley split the pipes twice and other tallies came from Roofe, Watson, Millhausen, and Kruger.
Adam Rischbieter added two assists to help the Lions, who outshot the Falcons 55-30 and Paulin-Hatch stopped 29 of the 30 pucks he faced.
In the middle game of the weekend, Lindenwood shutout Marian University (Wisc.) 7-0 Saturday evening. The Lions scored two in the first, one in the second, and four in the third. In a balanced attack, seven different players lit the lamp beginning with Tinsley at 5:20 of the first, followed by Meers at 17:46. Robinson added a solo effort just 54-seconds into the middle period, then Watson scored his 11
th of the season at 4:07 of the third, followed by the 10
th from Vierzba, the 13
th from
Stanley Lucas, and the 12
th from
Michael Mullen.
Lindenwood outshot the Sabres 40-10 and
Cade Kujawski stopped all 10 shots he faced to earn the victory. The Lions went 0/2 on the power play while holding Marian scoreless on three man-advantage chances.
With the three wins, Lindenwood improved to 21-7 on the season. The Lions face another three-game weekend when they travel to Oxford, Ohio for the Miami University (Ohio) Showcase January 19-21. Lindenwood faces Lake Superior State University at 4:45 p.m. on Friday, Florida Gulf Coast at 6 p.m. Saturday night, and Liberty University at 12:45 p.m. Sunday afternoon with all games played at Goggin Ice Arena.
