For the second time in two days, men's ACHA DII hockey earned a victory in the Maryville Showcase, this time topping the host Saints 5-2 Saturday evening at the Maryville Ice Center in Chesterfield, Missouri.
In a game that the Lions never trailed,
Adam Rischbieter started the scoring when he turned and slipped a five-hole shot to the back of the net unassisted at 6:45 of the first. The Saints tied the contest with just over four minutes remaining in the period, but Lindenwood took control from there with three unanswered in the second.
Ethan Christofferson netted his first collegiate goal on a play set up by
Gavin Delfosse and
Jacob Behnen at 6:04, then
Ryan Granville fed the puck to
Gage Vierzba on a perfect stretch pass. Vierzba used a forehand backhand deke that left the goal wide open for the goal at 8:40. After Maryville was called for unsportsmanlike conduct, the Lions went to work on the power play. Just over a minute in,
Ryan Granville connected for his seventh of the season, assisted by
Stanley Lucas and
Chase McClellan at 11:15 to give Lindenwood a 4-1 advantage.
The Saints answered with 2:35 remaining in the period to stay within striking distance at 4-2, but four penalties in the third period kept them mostly on the defensive. As a result, the Lions dominated, but didn't put the game away until Lucas drove hard to the net and buried a backdoor pass from
Austin Meers with 1:58 remaining. Granville earned the second assist on the play that gave Lindenwood its final 5-2 margin.
The Lions outshot Maryville 46-16 and
Cole Wheaton stopped 14 of the 16 pucks he faced to earn his second career victory between the pipes. Lindenwood scored once on five man-advantage chances while holding the Saints scoreless on two power plays.
With the win, the Lions improved to 5-1 on the season. They will wrap up play in the Maryville Showcase against the University of Arkansas Saturday afternoon. The puck drops at 3 p.m. at the Maryville Ice Center.
