Men's ACHA DII ice hockey overwhelmed the University of Arkansas 11-3 in the final game of the Maryville Showcase Saturday afternoon at the Maryville Ice Center in Chesterfield, Missouri.
Brett Robinson earned a hat trick and a total of eight Lions scored in a balanced offensive attack against the Razorbacks.
Lindenwood exploded for six unanswered, even-strength goals in the opening 17-minutes of the first period. Robinson sounded the horn for the first score at 3:02 off a pass from
Alex Villa.
Logan Millhausen followed at 6:45 on a play set up by
Chase McClellan and
Jacob Behnen. Robinson set up freshman
Gavin Delfosse for his first collegiate goal at 10:23 and it was 3-0 Lions.
The offense was quiet for the next six minutes, but then Lindenwood lit the lamp three times in a span of just 47-seconds. Robinson netted his second with help from
Jake Lange and
Shane Ziegler at 16:27,
Stanley Lucas split the pipes at 16:56, assisted by
Michael Mullen and McLellan, and then Delfosse scored the second of his career at 17:14 from
Jack Louko and McClellan. Arkansas broke the shutout at 17:50, but
Austin Meers answered at 19:32. Lucas and Mullen earned the assists on the play that made it 7-1 Lions at the first intermission.
Things settled down a bit in the second period, but it was one that included some more penalties. The Razorbacks killed off an early high sticking minor and then benefitted from back-to-back infractions from Lindenwood. A tripping penalty at 4:18 was followed by a five-minute major for boarding at 4:58. Arkansas scored on the ensuing five-on-three power play at 5:52, but the Lions were able to kill off the rest of the power play.
Lindenwood put its foot back on the accelerator from there. Robinson completed his hat trick at 16:12 on a play from Lange and Defosse to make it 8-2 at the end of the second. The Lions added another three in the third. Mullen hit the back of the net at 6:32, from Behnen and Meers,
Adam Rischbieter scored at 7:08 from Ziegler and Behnen, and
Trent Sylvester netted his first of the season at 16:46 from
Ryan Granville and Delfosse. The Razorbacks scored their third of the contest with 1:48 remaining in regulation.
Lindenwood outshot Arkansas 48-29 and
Justin Grenon stopped 26 of 29 to earn the victory in goal. The Lions went scoreless on four power plays while yielding a goal on five man-advantage chances to the Razorbacks.
With the victory, Lindenwood completes the Maryville Showcase with a 3-0 record and improves to 6-1 overall. The Lions will host their own showcase event October 18-20. Lindenwood is scheduled to play Weber State University at 10 p.m. Friday night, the University of Iowa at 8 p.m. Saturday night, and Trine University at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon with all games taking place at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
