Men's Ice Hockey - ACHA DII Jackson Case

Lions Win 10th Consecutive; Extinguish Flames 4-2

After a 12 day hiatus, the Lindenwood men's ACHA division II ice hockey team returned to action on Friday night defeating the Liberty Flames 4-2 at Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri. With the victory, the Lions secured their 10th straight victory and improved their record to 12-1 on the season.

The first period began with sluggish starts by both teams, the Lions broke the scoreless tie 18:56 into the period. Stanley Lucas scored his sixth goal of the season, and gave the Lions their first lead thanks to a Liberty penalty and assists by Austin Meers and Nick Jones. The Lions made it 2-0 less than a minute later when Gage Vierzba found the back of the net for his eighth goal of the season at 19:19. Adam Rischbieter and Micheal Mullen picked up an assist each on the goal. The 2-0 Lions lead held for the rest of the period.

Penalties were abundant in the second period as Lindenwood was called for four penalties while Liberty was called for five. At 2:48, the Flames were called for their second penalty of the period. Lions defensemen Chase McClellan capitalized on the man-advantage, scoring his third goal of the season while on the power play at 4:20. This goal, assisted by Mullen and Ryan Granville, ended up being the game winning goal for Lindenwood and gave the Lions a 3-0 lead early in the second. However, the Flames soon began a second period charge that put them on the score sheet at 5:58 making it 3-1. At 17:53, Liberty added a power play goal of their own, tightening the score to 3-2 as the period ended.

With the score tight, Lindenwood buckled down. The Lions played a clean third period, drawing no penalties and outshooting the Flames 13-7 in the frame. Lions goaltender Cole Wheaton settled into a groove again, and the Lions defense remained strong like it has all season. Lindenwood put the game on ice at 5:24 when Nick Jones scored his seventh goal of the season. The goal gave Jones his second point of the night and the Lions a 4-2 lead which they would hold for the remainder of the contest. Micheal Mullen and Jacob Behnen picked up assists on the Jones goal. For Mullen, it was his third assist of the night. Wheaton thwarted a late push by the Flames, securing himself a win and the Lions their tenth straight victory.

The Lions look to extend their incredible winning streak to 11 games tomorrow afternoon as they again do battle with the Liberty Flames. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Centene Community Ice Center.
