Men's ACHA DII ice hockey began its season with a 7-1 victory over Indiana Friday night at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
The Lions cruised to victory in the contest, but it was the Hoosiers that scored first on an even-strength effort just 48-seconds into the first. Lindenwood controlled the rest of the period with three unanswered goals. The first came from
Eli Roofe unassisted at 5:34 to tie things at 1-1. The Lions took the lead for good at 7:08 when
Michael Mullen sounded the horn on a play set up by
Stanley Lucas and
Austin Meers. Meers then called his own number at 10:34 off a feed from
Zachary Schwartz and it was 3-1 Lindenwood.
Five penalties were called in the second period, but no goals were scored. The Lions then added four to their ledger in the third. After Zach Maupin set up
Adam Rischbieter at 4:02 to make it 4-1, Maupin split the pipes for a power play goal at 5:55 with help from
Gage Vierzba and
Chase McClellan.
Brett Robinson gave Lindenwood a 6-1 lead when he stole the puck and hit the back of the net unassisted at 15:51. The Lions capitalized on another power play at 18:33 when McClellan scored, assisted by
Jack Louko and Maupin.
Lindenwood outshot Indiana 41 to 18 and
Justin Grenon stopped 17 of the 18 pucks he faced to earn the win in goal. The Lions went 2/5 on the power play while holding the Hoosiers scoreless on six man-advantage chances.
Lindenwood will go for a sweep of the two-game series when they take on Indiana at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Centene Community Ice Center.
