The men's ACHA division II ice hockey team defeated the Liberty University Flames Saturday afternoon by the score of 4-1 at Goggin Ice Arena in Oxford, Ohio. The victory was their second game of the Miami University (Ohio) Showcase. Â
The Lions established pace of play early in the first period but were unable to sneak any of their 14 shots on goal past the Flames netminder. The Flames put eight shots on goal of their own, but Lions goaltender
Justin Grenon held strong, making an incredible left pad save in the process. The first period ended with both teams held knotted at zero.
The second period started similarly to the first and the game remained deadlocked. At 16:47,
Zac Maupin and
Gavin Delfosse were tripped leading to a Lions 5-3 powerplay. The Lions at 18:20 thanks to the Captain,
Ryan Granville. Granville's one-timer came off a play set up by
Austin Meers and
Brett Robinson. The Lions extended their lead to 2-0 thanks to another powerplay goal at 14:08, this time thanks to Robinson. Meers and
Nick Jones were each credited with assists on the play. However, Lindenwood was not done scoring in the period. With 7:19 left in the second, Maupin beat the Flames goaltender short side to give the Lions a commanding 3-0 lead. Delfosse picked up an assist on the play. The Lions offense tallied 29 shots on goal in the second to the Flames 17.
The third period was more evenly matched than the previous two frames. Liberty finally got on the scoreboard at 8:31 making it 3-1 Lindenwood. The Lions regained their three-goal lead a short while later thanks to amazing Lindenwood special teams play. Granville and Jones set up a play which allowed
Brett Robinson to blast a shot from the point into the back of the net. The Lions held their 4-1 lead for the remainder of the game.
Lindenwood outshot Liberty 42-25 and
Justin Grenon picked up a win. The victory completed the season series sweep of the Flames (5-0-0) and improved the Lions record to 27-2.
