Men’s ACHA DII Hockey Sweeps Trine

Men's ACHA DII ice hockey swept a two-game weekend series against Trine University, taking game one 8-0 Saturday night and topping the Thunder 7-3 Sunday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.

The Lions overwhelmed Trine early in the first game with three goals in the first four minutes. Helped by a Thunder slashing penalty, Brock Hart scored on the power play with help from Jack Louko and Nick Jones at the 1:18 mark. Chase McClellan then found the back of the net at even strength on a play set up by Gavin Delfosse and Zach Maupin at 3:03. Just seconds later, Maupin and Brett Robinson assisted on an Ethan Christofferson goal at 3:41. After the quick flurry of scoring, Lindenwood was held at bay through the rest of the period but out shot the Thunder 25-2.

The Lions added two more in the middle frame. Brett Bell lit the lamp with his second of the season off a pass from Eli Roofe at 8:10 to make it 4-0. Gage Vierzba then sounded the horn at 14:47 with help from Alex Cameron and McClellan. Lindenwood carried a 5-0 advantage into the second intermission.

The third period was highlighted by another three from the Lions and some chippy play, with three penalties on Lindenwood and seven on Trine. Back-to-back calls against the Thunder in the first few minutes gave the Lions a brief five-on-three which expired quickly, but Lindenwood still scored five-on-four. Austin Meers and Robinson set up Louko for his 19th of the season at 3:12. Back at even strength, the Lions struck again when Carter Walby put the puck on the blade of Roofe at 4:19 to make it 7-0. The final goal of the game came from Louko at 11:07, assisted by Meers and Robinson.

Lindenwood out shot Trine overall 77-15 with Ethan Jourden stopping all 15 shots he faced to earn the shutout victory.

The Thunder scored three against the Lions in the second game on Sunday, but Lindenwood still controlled the contest from the start, holding a 4-0 lead early in the second and a 7-1 lead early in the third.

Maupin gave the Lions a 1-0 lead off a feed from Louko at 1:18. Louko then split the pipes with help from Zachary Schwartz and Meers at 15:32. Trine was called for tripping late in the period and Lindenwood capitalized with Robinson and Meers setting up Hart for the power play goal at 19:41.

Jake Lange added to the 3-0 lead at 3:41 of the second when he stole the puck and scored unassisted. The Thunder scored their first of the game midway through the period, but the Lions answered with two. Brett Bell sounded the horn on a play set up by Brayden Wilson and Lange at 12:45, then William Lalonde netted his first of the season at 18:25, assisted by Finnigan Greeley.

Eli Roofe pushed the Lindenwood lead to six when he found the back of the net at the 42-second mark of the third, assisted by Logan Millhausen and Brett Bell. Trine scored twice before the end of regulation, at 6:10 on an even strength play, then a roughing penalty against the Lions led to a Thunder power play goal at 17:59 for the final 7-3 margin.

Lindenwood out shot Trine 70-26 and Justin Grenon stopped 23 of the 26 pucks he faced to earn the win in goal.

With the two victories, the Lions complete the regular season with a record of 29-0-1. The ACHA Central Region Tournament is scheduled for February 19-21 at the Kube Sports Complex in Hammond, Indiana.
