Men's ACHA DII ice hockey scored the first four goals of the game and finished with a 6-1 win over Weber State at the Lake Placid Fall Faceoff Invitational Saturday night at Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, New York.
The first two scores came off the blade of
Brandon Catalano in the opening period.
Austin Meers and
Lance Murray earned the assists on the first goal at 7:03 and
Alex Cameron and
Nick Jones helped on the second at 17:22, giving the Lions a 2-0 lead at the first intermission.
It was more of the same through most of the second. Robert Walby split the pipes off a
Jake Lange pass at 7:52 and Jones found the back of the net at 10:19 off a feed from Meers to make it 4-0 Lindenwood. A roughing penalty late in the period led to the only Wildcats goal of the contest with just two-seconds remaining.
The Lions extended their 4-1 advantage in the final 20 minutes.
Brock Hart sounded the horn on a play set up by Meers and Jones at 5:21, and then
Zac Maupin set up
Gage Vierzba for a power play goal at 7:05 after a Weber State slashing penalty.
Lindenwood outshot the Wildcats 36 to 18 and
Cole Wheaton stopped 17 of the 18 shots he faced in goal. The Lions scored once on six power play chances while yielding one goal on four man-advantage opportunities.
With the win, Lindenwood is 2-0 on the young season. The Lions wrap up play at the Lake Placid Fall Faceoff on Sunday against the University of Tampa. The puck drops at 11:45 a.m. CDT at the USA Rink in Lake Placid.
