Women’s ACHA Hockey is Shutout in Season Opener Despite 30 Shots on Goal

Women's ACHA ice hockey had 30 shots on goal but was shutout 7-0 in the season opener against Miami (Ohio) University Saturday night at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.

The Redhawks started quickly with four scores in the opening period. The first two were even strength tallies at 3:53 and 4:59. The third came on a power play at 7:58 after a Lions hooking penalty. Miami added another at 11:39 and led 4-0 at the first intermission.

A Lindenwood cross-checking penalty led to another power play goal at 2:42 of the second to give the Redhawks a 5-0 advantage. The Lions had a chance to get on the board midway through the period after a Miami penalty, but the Redhawks flipped the script with an unassisted, short-handed goal at 11:48 to make it 6-0.

From that point through the rest of the game, it was a more balanced effort with each team putting an similar number of shots on goal, but Lindenwood still could not find the back of the net, despite having four power play opportunities.

The Lions were only outshot 11-10 in the third, but it was Miami that added a seventh score at the 7:48 mark of the third for the final margin.

Lindenwood netminder Erica Didocha stopped 36 of the 43 shots she faced as the Redhawks finished with a 43 to 30 shots on goal advantage. The Lions went scoreless on six power play chances while giving up two goals to Miami on five man-advantage opportunities.

Lindenwood returns to the ice for a Women's Midwest College Hockey (WMCH) conference game on the road against McKendree University September 24. The puck drops at 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon at the Metro Rec-Plex in O'Fallon, Illinois.
