After a game on Friday that included over an hour of total penalty calls, it was a much tamer game on Saturday night with only 40 minutes of calls as men's ACHA DII ice hockey completed a sweep of the University of Missouri with a 4-1 win at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
The opening period featured 14 shots on goal from the Lions and 10 from the Tigers, but neither team was able to score, despite a four-on-four and two man-advantage chances for Mizzou.
Lindenwood took control of the contest in the second. A roughing call on Missouri led to a
Nick Jones power play goal at 5:53, assisted by
Austin Meers and
Brock Hart. Back-to-back slashing penalties against the Tigers at 10:44 and 11:13 led to a five-on-three for the Lions and Hart capitalized on a play set up by
Brandon Catalano and
Nick Jones at the 12:16 mark to make it 2-0. Later in the period,
Carter Walby scored his second of the season with help from
Zachary Schwartz and
Lance Murray and it was 3-0 at the second intermission.
Each team scored once in the third. The Mizzou goal came at 1:57 while Lindenwood sounded the horn at 15:05. Schwartz and
Zac Maupin set up
Gavin Delfosse on the play to make it 4-1.
The Lions outshot the Tigers 49 to 23 with
Jordan Behnen stopping 22 of the 23 shots he faced to earn the win in goal.
With the victory, Lindenwood improved to 5-0. The Lions hit the road for a two-game series against Oklahoma State October 2-3. The puck drops at 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon and at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the WeStreet Ice Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
