Women's Lacrosse Survives a Night of Upsets at National Tournament

It was a night of upsets at the 2010 WDIA Women's Lacrosse National Championship as only one of the top four seeds advanced to the semifinals. That one team was Lindenwood as the No. 2 Lady Lions advanced to the semifinals for the first time in program history with a 12-9 victory over No. 7 BYU.

Lindenwood and BYU were tied at six at halftime and the Cougars put the Lady Lions in a hole by scoring the first two goals of the second half. Lindenwood fought back, outscoring BYU 6-1 the rest of the way, and it went ahead for good with a Justiene Groothuis goal with just over eight minutes remaining.
Lacey Vatland and Kathryn St. George each led the offense with three goals apiece. Groothuis finished with two goals and one assists. Draws played a key role in the game as Eleni Papadakos won 10 and Vatland won four. Defensively, Christie Mearns made six saves in goal.

Lindenwood, which is now 21-2 on the year, will face No. 11 Colorado State in the semifinal round on Friday night at 8 p.m. (pacific time). Those two teams met earlier this year, with the Lady Lions winning by a 10-4 margin. The other semifinal on Friday has No. 5 Cal Poly taking on No. 9 Colorado.
