Lions Win Las Vegas 7’s Invitational CRC Qualifier; Tie Arkansas State

Men's rugby won six straight games to capture the Cup Championship at the Las Vegas 7's Invitational CRC Qualifier March 2-4 at the Star Nursery Fields and Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.  The Lions only yielded 19 points in accomplishing the feat.

Beginning in Pool C on Thursday, Lindenwood swept through St. Bonaventure 26-0, Colorado 50-5, and the University of Nevada – Las Vegas 66-0 to advance to the quarterfinals as the No. 1 seed.  The Lions faced No. 8 seed Lindenwood – Belleville on Friday and took care of business in 40-14 victory.  Notre Dame College (Ohio) was the next opponent in the semifinals and Lindenwood posted another shutout 36-0 over the No. 5 seed.  No. 3 seed Clemson awaited the Lions in the finals on Saturday and it was another shutout win 29-0.

By taking the title at the qualifier, Lindenwood earned its way into the 2017 CRC 7's Invitational, which will be played in June.

The Lions returned home and returned to the pitch quickly for a Mid-South Conference 15's match against Arkansas State Sunday on the road in Jonesboro, Arkansas.  Head Coach Josh Macy left some of his players at home during the Vegas trip, but some pulled double-duty at both events.  The end result was a 17-17 tie with the Red Wolves.

Arkansas State put points on the board first with an unconverted try, but Lindenwood answered and the contest went to halftime tied 5-5.  There was more back-and-forth play in the second 45 minutes.  The Red Wolves scored twice, but the Lions matched them point for point.

The tie left Lindenwood in third place in the Mid-South with three points and a record of 0-1-1.  It's still early, but Life University has already taken charge with 13 points and a perfect 3-0 mark.  Clemson is second at 1-0.

Overall, the Lions are 25-7-2 in combined 15's and 7's play for the season.  They host Davenport University in another conference tilt March 11 at Hunter Stadium.  The game is the Charles Labry Memorial match and the opening kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
