Men’s Rugby Runs Past Clemson

After suffering a tough loss to Arkansas State the previous weekend, the Lions returned to form with a 68-3 win over Clemson Saturday afternoon at the Lindenwood Track in St. Charles, Missouri.

The Lions took advantage of superior set pieces and field position to mount pressure on the Tigers despite facing cold and snowy conditions.  Captain Wesley White set the theme on both sides of the ball with powerful runs and low, driving tackles.  It did not take long for Lindenwood to find the try zone when Cristian Rodriguez dotted down in the first minute.

Play became choppy after that with some questionable whistles against both sides, but the Lions took advantage of some missed chances by Clemson at the goal line and eventually put a stranglehold on the match.  Stout defense from senior prop Alex McDonnell and sophomore second row Emmanuel Albert kept the Tigers moving backwards and that pressure started showing on the scoreboard with four tries and a 29-0 lead at halftime.

Lindenwood continued to show positive play in the second half as the reserves joined the fight on the pitch.  Tyren Al-Jiboori subbed in the 56th minute and helped shut down the few opportunities that Clemson had while also finding some seams in the defense.

Five players ultimately finished the game with two tries each including White, Rodriguez, Michael de Waal, Anelisa Mteto and Sam Chapman.

With the victory, the Lions improved to 13-2 overall.  They face an always tough Life University squad February 23 in Marietta, Georgia.  In the last 15's match-up, the Running Eagles edged Lindenwood 22-18.  The opening kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Lupo Family Field.
