Men's ACHA Division II hockey improved to 3-0 on the young season with a 7-2 win over Trine University Friday night at the Thunder Ice Arena in Angola, Indiana.
The Lions took a 1-0 lead midway through the opening period when
Jack Radley scored his second goal of the season at 9:03 on a play set up by
Jacob Behnen and
Praveen Dhaliwal. Radley also had a big hand in the second goal for Lindenwood. After winning a battle on the boards, he passed the puck out to
Shane Ziegler who walked into the slot and ripped a shot to the back of the net with 8:29 remaining. The Lions extended their lead to 3-0 after
Adam Rischbieter picked off a Thunder breakout pass and quickly snapped the puck into the goal for an unassisted effort at the 14:29 mark.
Lindenwood continued to add to the lead in the second.
Josh Linn scored on an odd man rush at 3:57, assisted by
Stanley Lucas and
Sean McMahon. With 3:41 remaining, Behnen sent a shot towards the net and Dhliwal scored on a tip-in.
Michael Mullens earned the second assist on the play that made it 5-0 Lions.
Lindenwood went to the power play late in the period and just before the man-advantage ended,
RJ Hart sounded the horn on a rebound with help from Dhaliwal and Radley with 46-seconds remaining in the second.
The Lions carried a 6-0 lead into the third and were on another power play, but Trine broke the shutout with a short-handed effort just 24-seconds into the period. Lindenwood made it 7-1 with 15-minutes remaining in regulation. Hart passed the puck to Lucas who sent it on goal, creating a juicy rebound for
Sean McMahon. The Thunder scored their second goal of the contest at the 6:22 mark, but that was a close as they would get.
Michael Errico, who played just over 40 shutout minutes to start the game, earned the win in goal for the Lions who outshot Trine 34-16.
Lindenwood goes for the series sweep Saturday afternoon. The opening faceoff is set for 3 p.m. at the Thunder Ice Arena.
