The final outcome was in question until the last seconds of regulation, but when the final horn sounded, men's ACHA Division II ice hockey edged Minnesota 2-1 Saturday night at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
Goaltending was on display the entire game, but
Jack Radley managed to get the puck into the net for an early Lions lead at the 3:53 mark of the first on a play set up by
RJ Hart and
Stanley Lucas. It remained a 1-0 contest for the rest of the period and through most of the second until the Gophers found an equalizer at the 18:15 mark.
What proved to be the game-winner for Lindenwood came off the stick of
Sean McMahon at 12:11 of third, assisted by
Declan Carter and
Jacob Behnen, but with just under eight minutes remaining, Minnesota still had plenty of time to try to get the game tied again. The Gophers pulled their netminder with 1:46 remaining and put great pressure on the Lions defense with the extra attacker, but
Michael Errico turned away every shot to preserve the one-goal victory.
Lindenwood outshot Minnesota 38-28, and Errico stopped 27 of the 28 shots he faced and all 11 in the third to earn the win.
The Lions improved to 22-5-0 on the season. They'll attempt to sweep the Gophers in the final game of the series Sunday afternoon at 4:50 p.m. at the Centene Community Ice Center Outdoor Rink.
