Men's ACHA Division II ice hockey swept a two-game set against Miami (Ohio), edging the Redhawks 4-3 on Friday and then beating them 4-2 on Saturday at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
In the series finale, Miami took an early 1-0 lead at 6:17 of the second, but the Lions countered with three straight goals.
Mason Kruger sounded the horn on a play set up by
Sean McMahon and
Sam Watson at 7:57, then
Stanley Lucas capitalized on a Redhawks roughing penalty and scored with the man-advantage with help from
Brett Robinson and
Nolan Kahl at 14:16. Just 24-seconds of even-strength hockey later,
Zac Maupin fed
Austin Meers for a goal and Lindenwood led 3-1.
The Redhawks pulled to within a single tally with 6:25 remaining in the third, and then they pulled their goaltender with 1:12 left in regulation for the extra attacker, but
Chase McClellan took possession of the puck and passed to Kahl for the empty-netter just seven seconds later to make it 4-2.
The Lions outshot Miami 46-20 and
Cade Kujawski stopped 16 of 18 shots that he faced in just under 54-minutes of work and was credited with the victory in goal.
Ethan Paulin-Hatch came on in relief for the final 6:25 and stopped the only two shots he faced.
In the opener on Friday, it was a back-and-forth game until a major penalty against the Redhawks gave Lindenwood a big opportunity to take control. After Miami scored early in the first,
Brett Robinson split the pipes off a feed from Kruger at 3:23. The Redhawks took a 2-1 lead midway through the second on an unassisted goal, but they were called for a five-minute boarding penalty and the Lions pounced on the situation, scoring two during the long power play. Robinson lit the lamp for the first one at 12:15, with help from
Stanley Lucas and Kahl, then Maupin set up
Gage Vierzba at 13:20 and Lindenwood led 3-2.
Miami managed to tie the score at 3-3 with 12:12 remaining in the game, but
Michael Mullen answered just 38-seconds later with what proved to be the game-winner, assisted by
Eli Roofe and
Anthony Tinsley.
The Lions outshot the Redhawks 51-24 and Paulin-Hatch stopped 21 of the 24 shots he faced to earn the victory in goal.
With the two wins, Lindenwood improved to 12-1 overall and extended its winning streak to eight in a row. The Lions host Concordia University (Wisc.) November 4-5. The puck drops at 8:30 p.m. Saturday night and again at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Centene Community Ice Center.
