After shutting out Liberty on Saturday night, men's ACHA Division II ice hockey was upended 4-1 by the Flames Sunday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
The series opener was an evenly played game with the Lions getting just two goals in five-on-five play. The first came with 68-seconds remaining in the opening frame when
Sean McMahon and
Brett Robinson set up
Stanley Lucas.
Lindenwood carried a 1-0 lead into the second and doubled the advantage on a
Mason Kruger shot at 6:11, assisted by Lucas and
Adam Rischbieter. The Flames outshot the Lions down the stretch, but the difference was the goaltending work from
Ethan Paulin-Hatch, who stopped 25 shots overall and 10 in the third period to earn the victory.
Lindenwood added an empty net goal with 1:44 left in regulation after Liberty pulled its netminder. Lucas stole the puck and passed to McMahon who buried it for his sixth of the season.
The Lions outshot the Flames 28-25 in the contest. Both teams went scoreless on three power play opportunities.
The series finale proved to be quite chippy with 57 combined minutes of penalties called. Liberty was able to capitalize on two of six power play chances while Lindenwood was held scoreless on seven man-advantage chances.
The Flames took an early lead on the first power play of the game at the 7:29 mark. Despite a barrage of shots from both teams, the rest of the period and the entire second went by without any scoring. Liberty increased the advantage to 2-0 early in the third with an even-strength effort, but Lindenwood responded just over four-minutes later when Rischbieter netted his first of the season, assisted by
Jacob Behnen and
Steve Avalone at 5:59.
The Lions were still in the game trailing 2-1, but gave the puck away late in regulation, resulting in a breakaway for the Flames with 4:11 left in regulation. A bit of frustration led to the final Liberty goal. After Lindenwood was called for a major grabbing the facemask penalty, the Lions gave the Flames a five on three chance after another penalty was called with 25-seconds remaining. Liberty scored its fourth goal on the power play with four-seconds on the clock.
The Flames outshot Lindenwood 42-40, handing the Lions just their third loss of the season.
Lindenwood now stands at 14-3 on the year. The Lions take their first road trip in over a month when they travel to Estero, Florida to face Florida Gulf Coast November 17-18. The puck drops at 8:30 p.m. both Friday and Saturday night at Hertz Arena.
