Men's ACHA Division II ice hockey wrapped up its season with a 4-3 victory over Montana State in the final game of pool play at the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Men's Division II National Championship Sunday afternoon at the New England Sports Center (NESC) in Boston, Massachusetts. Despite already being eliminated from national title contention, the Lions built a nice lead in the second period, then held off a Bobcats rally in the latter stages of the contest.
In what became a very chippy affair, Lindenwood scored first when
Sean McMahon set up
Jack Radley at 5:42 of the first. After several penalty calls in the opening period, there were five calls on each squad in the second. The Lions took advantage of their first opportunity when
Ryan Granville connected with
Josh Linn for a power play goal at 4:08, but the puck got away from Lindenwood shortly thereafter and Montana State capitalized with an unassisted score just 36-seconds later to make it 2-1 Lions. A tripping call gave Lindenwood another power play and Radley sounded the horn for his second of the game, assisted by Granville and
Stanley Lucas at 10:05. Several minutes later, the Lions went on the penalty kill, but turned the tables when Granville took possession and sent a feed up ice to
Michael Mullen who then set up
Eli Roofe for a short-handed effort at 14:12.
That gave Lindenwood a comfortable 4-1 advantage, but the Bobcats pushed back, starting with a power play goal with 2:47 remaining in the period. They added an even strength goal in the first couple minutes of the third to pull within one and continued to press for the tying score, but the Lions defense and a great effort from goaltender
Michael Errico kept Montana State at bay.
With 1:34 remaining in regulation, the Bobcats pulled their net-minder for the extra attacker, but Lindenwood refused to yield and ran out the clock for the victory.
Montana State outshot the Lions 46-40, but Errico stopped 43 of the 46 shots he faced. Lindenwood went 2/8 on the power play while only allowing one goal on 10 man-advantage chances for the Bobcats.
With the win, the Lions wrap up the 2022-23 campaign with a record of 28-7-0.
