After suffering the only loss of the season at the hands of Trine two weeks ago, men's ACHA Division II ice hockey enacted a bit of revenge by posting their second shutout in as many days, this time 6-0 victory over the Thunder Sunday afternoon to sweep the Lindenwood Showcase at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri. For the second game in a row and third time in the last four games, a Lion earned a hat trick, this time a natural from
Gage Vierzba.
It was another game that featured numerous penalties, but Lindenwood scored its first two goals of the game at even-strength.
Jacob Behnen sounded the horn for his first of the season at 10:15 in the opening period on a play set up by
Chase McClellan and
Nick Jones, then Jones split the pipes for the fifth time this season off a feed from McClellan at 19:41 and it was 2-0 at the first intermission.
After killing off a penalty early in the second, Trine was called for high sticking and that led to a power play goal from
Adam Rischbieter with help from Vierzba and
Jack Louko at the 12-minute mark. Moments later, Vierzba began the string of his three scores in a row at 14:03, assisted by
Brett Robinson and Louko and the Lions carried a 4-0 advantage into the second intermission.
The Vierzba hat trick was completed in the opening minutes of the third. Louko earned his third assist of the game and Rischbieter received the secondary assist when Vierzba hit the back of the net at 2:30. Then, a cross-checking penalty put Lindenwood on the power play and Vierzba only needed 16-seconds to finish off his hat trick at 6:19. Rischbieter earned his third assist of the season and McClellan earned his 13
th to give the Lions their final 6-0 margin.
Lindenwood outshot the Thunder 47-11 and
Cade Kujawski stopped all 11 pucks he faced to earn the victory in goal. Vierzba led the offense with four total points on his hat trick and an assist, but three other Lions helped out with three points each. Louko and McClellan each had three assists in the game and Rischbieter had a goal and two assists. Lindenwood scored twice on six power plays while holding Trine scoreless on two official man-advantage chances.
With the win, the Lions improved to 9-1 overall and extended their winning streak to seven. Lindenwood will try to extend it against the University of St. Thomas October 25-26 at home. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 9 p.m. Friday night and 2:15 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center.
