Men's ACHA ice hockey defeated Iowa 13-0 in Lindenwood Showcase action Saturday night at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri. In a game that featured over 100 minutes of penalty time, the Lions scored three power play goals on 10 man-advantage chances.
Nick Jones netted his first collegiate goal and then went on to score four total for a hat trick.
What proved to be the winning goal came off the blade of
Chase McClellan just a minute into the contest on a play set up by
Gage Vierzba and
Jacob Behnen. In a moment of foreshadowing, the Hawkeyes were called for hooking at 16:07 and that led to the Jones goal at 16:33, assisted by
Brett Robinson and
Ryan Granville.
Trent Sylvester added his second of the season just over two minutes later with help from
Ethan Christofferson and
Gavin Delfosse at 18:45 and it was 3-0 Lindenwood at the first intermission.
The Lions added four more in the second. Jones split the pipes just 39-seconds into the period from
Michael Mullen and Granville, then Granville sounded the horn on a power play at 3:46 after an Iowa tripping penalty.
Austin Meers earned his ninth assist of the season and Jones his first. Jones completed his hat trick at the 7:19 mark. Behnen earned the primary assist and McClellen the secondary, for his 10
th assist of the year.
Zachary Schwartz then made it 7-0 at 15:33 on a play set up by Robinson and Mullen.
The Hawkeyes switched goaltenders to begin the third, but their new netminder faced an uphill battle as seven different Iowa players were called for penalties in the period, resulting in a 25-3 shot margin for Lindenwood in the final 20-minutes. The Lions added six more goals but ironically, only one came on the powerplay.
Christofferson accounted for one of the even-strength goals at 1:45 and the man-advantage goal at 9:44. In between those plays,
Eli Roofe scored his third of the season off a feed from
Anthony Tinsley at 3:43 and Jones netted his fourth of the game at 6:17. Tinsley split the pipes at 11:23 and Robinson completed the offensive barrage with an unassisted effort at 12:11.
Lindenwood outshot the Hawkeyes 54-17 and
Cole Wheaton stopped all 17 pucks he faced to earn the shutout victory in goal. In a balanced attack, 16 different Lions earned at least one point in the game, led by Jones with five on four goals and an assist. Robinson totaled four points on a goal and three assists. Three different players earned three points: Delfosse on three assists, Christofferson on two goals and an assist, and Granville on a goal and two assists.
With the win, Lindenwood improved to 8-1 overall and extended its winning streak to six games. The Lions wrap up play in the Lindenwood Showcase against Trine University at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center.
