The men's ACHA Division II ice hockey team defeated the Saint Thomas Tommies by a score of 5-0 at Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri last Friday night. The win is the seventh in a row for the red-hot Lions, and their third shutout victory in as many games.Â
Tensions between the benches were high and penalties were plentiful throughout the contest Gabe Vierzba capitalized on the second man advantage of the first period, scoring his seventh goal of the season making it 1-0 Lions at 17:50. Zac Maupin and Chase McClellan each recorded an assist on the play. Â
After tallying the helper in the first, Maupin netted a goal of his own at just 1:57 into the second period. The goal was his fourth of the season and was assisted by Jake Lange and Trent Sylvester. Lindenwood continued to bombard the Saint Thomas net minder with shots, a majority of which came on a fifteen minute power play courtesy of a major spearing penalty at 6:22. The Lions accumulated twenty shots on goal in the period compared to the Tommies mere four.Â
As the third period got underway, both tensions and penalties continued to increase. Gavin Delfosse extended the Lions lead to 3-0 with his third goal of the season thanks to a play set up by Brett Robinson and Zachary Schwartz at 5:39. Austin Meers scored a power play goal- his fifth of the year- just two minutes and nineteen seconds later making it 4-0 Lions. Both Robinson and Delfosse picked up assists on the goal. The final Lindenwood tally came at 8:31 as Shane Ziegler scored his first goal of the season thanks to assists from Carter Walby and Zac Maupin.Â
The Vierzba goal in the first was all the Lions needed as goaltender Cole Wheaton stopped all 23 Tommie shots. In a game that featured 65 minutes of combined penalty time, special teams play was a large key success for the Lions. The Lions were able to convert on two of their five power plays while holding St. Thomas scoreless on each of theirs.Â
Lindenwood will battle Saint Thomas again this Saturday, October 26 at Centene Community Ice Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:15 P.M.
