The men's ACHA division II ice hockey team completed the weekend sweep of the University of Kentucky Wildcats Sunday afternoon with a convincing 9-3 victory at Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri. This game was one of the fiercest, roughest, and most dominating performances the Lions have put on this season. Â In a contest that saw a whopping 115 combined minutes of penalty time, the Lions toughness allowed them to outlast the Wildcats on Sunday.
Lindenwood controlled the game from the drop of the puck. The Lions peppered the Wildcat net minder with 18 shots on goal in the first period; 3 of which found the back of the net. Â The first goal- his 3
rd of the season- was scored by
Logan Millhausen at 8:18 and was assisted by
Eli Roofe and
Brett Robinson. Then, just 50 seconds later,
Nick Jones scored an unassisted goal- his 13
th of year- making it 2-0 Lions. Midway through the first, the style of play took a turn when back-to-back cross-checking penalties were called on both sides. The game turned physical, just like the Lions like it. At 14:09, Kentucky cut the lead to 2-1, but Jones and the Lions responded again. At 18:36, Jones scored his 14
th of the season off feeds from
Jacob Behnen and
Chase McClellan. The score was 3-1 Lions heading into the second period of play.
The intensity kicked up another notch as the second period got underway. A Kentucky indirect hit to the head minor penalty led to the Lions 4
th goal of the contest. At 2:05,
Gavin Delfosse scored his 4
th goal of the season while on the power play thanks to assists from McClellan and
Zac Maupin. Kentucky answered with a power play goal of their own at 2:33, cutting the lead to 4-2 in favor of the Lions. At 4:59,
Stanley Lucas scored his 8
th of the year extending the Lions lead to 3 goals once again. Both Behnen and McClellan picked up assists on the Lucas goal. A goalie change by the Wildcats gave the team a brief spark, but it was only temporary. The Wildcats made it 5-3 at 8:20, but Lucas and the Lions answered once again. Lucas' 9
th goal of the year was scored on the power play at 16:22 thanks to excellent passing by
Austin Meers and
Brett Robinson. Both players were rewarded with assists for their efforts as the score was extended to 6-3 in favor of Lindenwood.
A penalty riddled third period began with a goal from
Jack Louko- his 6
th- and was assisted by Maupin at 3:16. With the Lions up comfortably 7-3, nine penalties would be called in the following 7:00, including one game misconduct for either team. While on the power play,
Nick Jones completed the hat trick, scoring his 15
th goal of the year at 12:27. Both Robinson and Lucas picked up assists on the goal. But Jones was not finished; he capped off his career day with his 4
th goal of the game, and 16
th of the season at 15:52. The score was now 9-3 in favor of the Lions with under 4:00 to play. The blowout was certainly humiliating for the Wildcats who attempted to take their frustrations out on the Lions. A massive brawl at 16:20 led to five 10-minute game misconduct penalties being dealt out. Nonetheless, the Lions finished the game strong, holding the Wildcats scoreless for the remainder of the game. The Lions tallied a jaw-dropping 54 shots on goal in the contest. Lindenwood starting goaltender,
Cole Wheaton, did not face much opposition in the game, but played decent stopping 10 of 13 Wildcat shots and earning the win.
With the victory, the Lions move to 16-2 on the season and have won back-to-back games for the first time since November 8
th and 9
th. The Lions' next test will be Friday, December 6
th as they take on the Concordia University of Wisconsin Falcons at Centene Community Ice Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m.
