After four games in pool play and two playoff games, a men's rugby squad of freshmen and sophomores emerged victorious at the Russ Ellis 10's Tournament on Saturday at Jaycee Park in Belleville, Illinois.
On a perfect day for rugby, the Lions were impressive, going 4-0 in pool play. They first shutout the Mercenaries 34-0, then followed with another shutout, 48-0 over the Bombers. The Royal Ramblers tested Lindenwood, but the Lions prevailed 31-12 before finishing with a 44-7 win over the Celts.
In the semifinals, Lindenwood had a rematch against the Royal Ramblers, one of the longest standing rugby clubs in the St. Charles, Missouri area. In an exciting showdown, the Lions won 25-5 to advance to the finals, where they defeated the Kings 28-5 to claim the Russ Ellis title for the second consecutive year.
Men's rugby continues 15's play in the Midwest Rugby Conference November 8 against Davenport University. The opening kickoff is set for 4 p.m. EST at the Farmers Field Insurance Complex in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
