It was a fun Friday night at the rink for the Lindenwood men's ACHA division II ice hockey team as they defeated the Maryville Saints at Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri by the score of 6-3. The victory extends the Lions winning streak to five games and improves their home ice record to an impressive 15-0.
The Lions came out of the gates firing on all cylinders and it did not take long for
Jack Louko and his line to get the scoring started. Just 1:50 into the game,
Zac Maupin and
Gavin Delfosse set up Louko for his eighth goal of year making it 1-0 Lindenwood. This line was humming all night long and less than a minute later, Maupin tallied his eighth goal of the season from Delfosse and
Trent Sylvester. Although up by two scores, the Lions continued their early offensive barrage which resulted in their third goal of the game at 9:05. The shot came off the stick of
Nick Jones and was assisted by
Chase McClellan and
Austin Meers. For Jones, it was his 19
th of the year and made it 3-0 in favor of the Lions. Lindenwood outshot Maryville 21-8 in the first period. The Saints were able to add a goal late in the period while on the power play, but the Lions still found themselves with a two-goal advantage heading into the second.
The Lions got their three-goal lead back shortly into the second period when
Logan Millhausen scored his fourth goal of the season at 4:04.
Ethan Christofferson and
Praveen Dhaliwal picked up an assist each on Millhausen's goal. The Lions held their 4-1 lead for a majority of the period until a Saints tally at 13:34 made it 4-2. Both teams were more evenly matched in this period and the shots on goal reflected this. The Lions still managed to outshoot the Saints 9-8, but each team managed to score one goal in the second period.
The trend of scoring early in periods continued for the Lions in the third.
Zac Maupin scored his second of the game and ninth of the season at 2:23, and extened the Lions lead to 5-2. Both McClellan and Delfosse were rewarded with assists on the Maupin goal. While on the power play, Maryville cut the lead to two goals once again at 11:00. However, the Lions were able to answer with a power play goal of their own at 15:13 thanks to Michal Mullen. For Mullen, it was his eighth goal of the season and came courtesy of a play set up by
Austin Meers and
Nick Jones. The goal extended the Lions lead to 6-3 and it held that way for the remainder of the contest.
Overwhelming offense was certainly a key to the Lions success Friday night as they outshot the Saints 48-21.
Justin Grenon continued his recent hot streak by making 18 of 21 possible saves and earning the win. With the victory, the Lions move to 20-2 on the season and firmly in first place in the men's ACHA division II Independent division with 41 points. The Lions face the Saints once again on Saturday afternoon at Centene Community Ice Center. Puckdrop is scheduled for 3:30.
