It was a good weekend for the men's ACHA division II ice hockey team as they completed the weekend sweep of the Sault College Cougars by the score of 6-0 Sunday afternoon at Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri. The Lions went 3-0-0 this weekend by beating both Sault College and Concordia University (Wisc.) by a combined score of 19-3.
From the drop of the puck, penalties were called early and often in this game.
Stanley Lucas got the scoring for the Lions at 8:25 as he scored his 11
th of the season while on the power play.
Austin Meers and
Nick Jones were rewarded with an assist each on the goal. While on another power play,
Michael Mullen added his 6
th of the year at 11:39 off feeds from Lucas and Jones. The Lions maintained fierce offensive zone pressure for a majority of the first period and were able to get 19 shots on the Cougar net minder. The score was 2-0 Lindenwood when the first period ended.
The second period was much more evenly matched. The two clubs each had moments where they matched each other stride for stride and the shot total for each team reflected this. The Lions mustered 13 shots on net, while the Cougars tallied 10. However, neither team was able to find the back of the net, so the score remained 2-0 after two periods of play.
As the third period got underway, multiple costly penalties sent the Lions to the power play once again. The Lions scored four times on the power play in the third period, starting with Lucas' 12
th of the year and 2
nd of the game just 44 seconds into the period.
Ryan Granville and
Austin Meers picked up assists on the Lucas power play goal. With the Lions now up 3-0, Meers scored a power play goal of his own at 2:47 thanks to a feed from
Michael Mullen. For Meers, it was his 9
th goal of the season. At 9:24,
Stanley Lucas completed the hattrick with his 13
th goal of the season and made it 5-0 Lindenwood. Meers and Jones both tallied assists on Lucas' 3
rd goal. 28 seconds later, Jones and Granville set up
Michael Mullen for his 7
th goal of the year and 2
nd of the game while on the power play making it 6-0 Lions midway through the third period. That score held for the remainder of the game.
An unbelievable day for the special teams units and excellent goaltending by Lions net minder,
Justin Grenon, helped the Lions earn the series sweep. Grenon made the most of his start, stopping all 18 shots faced and earning the win. With the victory, the Lions improve to 19-2 on the year and have won five straight. They will look to win their sixth straight next Friday as they take on the Maryville University Saints at Centene Community Ice Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 9 p.m.
