Stanley Lucas capped off a late rally with a shootout goal to give men's ACHA ice hockey a come-from-behind 5-4 victory Saturday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri. The Lions trailed 4-1 early in the second, but forced overtime, ultimately setting up the shootout heroics.

Austin Meers gave Lindenwood an early 1-0 lead in the game on a play set up by
Brett Robinson and Lucas at 7:37, but the Hoosiers scored the next four goals. The first came on the power play at 10:38 after a high sticking penalty on the Lions. Indiana added an even-strength effort just before the end of the period and a giveaway led to an unassisted goal, the third for Ben Rosenberg, just 12-seconds into the second for a 3-1 Hoosiers lead. Lindenwood was called for interference moments later and that resulted in another man-advantage score from Indiana at 2:14.
From there, the Lions held Indiana scoreless and mounted their comeback, beginning with a
Jack Louko goal at 7:09, assisted by
Zachary Schwartz and
Gavin Delfosse. It remained 4-2 in favor of the Hoosiers through the rest of the period and through the first seven minutes of the third, but Lindenwood then scored twice in a span of just over two minutes to tie the game.
Ryan Granville sounded the horn first at 7:53 with help from Delfosse and
Brett Robinson, followed by a Lucas goal off a feed from
Chase McClellan at 9:54.
Later in the period with the contest knotted at four, the Lions gave Indiana a golden opportunity to retake the lead when they were called for two penalties at the 13:27 mark, but the Hoosiers were unable to take advantage of the five-on-three chance. Ultimately, time ran out in regulation and an additional five-minute overtime wasn't enough to settle things either, so it was time for a shootout.
In the first round, Zachary Maupin jumped over the wall for Lindenwood and Rosenberg for Indiana, but neither scored. Lucas gave the Lions the lead in the second round and the Hoosiers were denied. Meers tried to seal the victory in the third round, but missed. That gave Indiana a chance to score and extend the shootout, but Lindenwood goalie
Cade Kujawski repelled the shot attempt, and the Lions were able to celebrate.
Lindenwood outshot the Hoosiers 46-31 and Kujawski stopped 27 of the 31 shots he faced, along with another three in the shootout, to earn the victory. The Lions went scoreless on four power play chances while yielding a pair of goals on five man-advantage opportunities to Indiana.
With the win, Lindenwood earned a sweep and begins the season with a 2-0 record overall. The Lions hit the road for their next series against Trine University October 4-5. The opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. EDT Friday night and at 2 p.m. EDT Saturday afternoon at the Thunder Ice Arena in Angola, Indiana.
