Men's Ice Hockey - ACHA DII Jackson Case

Lions Overcome Two Goal Third Period Deficit: Defeat Redhawks 6-5 in Shootout

The Lindenwood men's ACHA division II ice hockey team completed a thrilling 6-5 comeback victory on Saturday night against the Miami (Ohio) University Redhawks at Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri. The shootout victory marked the 11th straight win for the Lions.

The Redhawks drew first blood in the contest, scoring just 1:09 into the game. A Redhawk interference minor gave the Lions their first power play of the game to which Nick Jones and the Lions capitalized at 3:27. Jones' 21st goal of the season was set up by Brett Robinson and Ryan Granville. The Redhawks scored again at 5:16, but the Lions answered right back. While on the power play, Jones netted his second of the game at 6:26 thanks to a play set up by Austin Meers and Stanley Lucas. Lindenwood outshot Miami 21-8 in the period, but the 2-2 tie held until the final horn sounded.

The deadlock continued well into the second period as both goaltenders made several excellent saves. The Lions outshot the Redhawks once again, 15-7 in the second. However, the Redhawks were able to put one of their seven shots past Lions netminder Justin Grenon. At 16:17 Nolan Kahl was called for his second minor penalty of the afternoon. The Redhawks took advantage of the power play scoring at 16:40 and taking a 3-2 lead into the third period.

Unlike the lowscoring second period, the third saw scoring by both sides. The Redhawks extended their lead to 4-2 just 0:43 seconds into the period, but the Lions answered quickly at 1:19. Stanley Lucas scored his 16th goal of the season and Chase McClellan was rewarded with an assist on the play. Now trailing by just one goal, the Lions went back on the power play. Austin Meers and the Lions tied the game once again at 10:45 thanks to a set play started by Brett Robinson and Ryan Granville. The Redhawks regained the lead at 15:43, but man-of-the-weekend, Nolan Kahl tied the game 5-5 less than a minute later. After heading to the penalty box twice in the game, Kahl made up for his mistakes with the game-tying goal- his second of the season and of the weekend.

The 5:00 minute overtime period saw two shots on goal by both sides, but no goals. In the shootout, Justin Grenon stopped all three shots by the Redhawks and gave the Lions a chance to win it with Gavin Delfosse left to shoot. Delfosse rose to the occasion, sending the game-winning shot past the Redhawk netminder and the Lions fans home happy.

Special teams were key for the Lions once again as they were able to capitalize on three Miami penalties. Justin Grenon earned the win as he saved 22 of 27 Redhawk shots including all three shootout chances. With their 11th straight victory, the Lions record now stands at 25-2 and a perfect 18-0 at home. The Lions will now head to Oxford Ohio to take part in the Miami University (Ohio) Showcase. Their first matchup will be against the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles. Puckdrop is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Goggin Ice Arena in Oxford, Ohio.
