After a three-goal victory on Saturday, men's ACHA DII ice hockey posted a 5-3 win on Sunday to sweep the University of Tampa at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri. The Lions jumped in front with five unanswered goals in the first half of the contest and then held off a charging Spartan squad in the final period.
After a scoreless opening nine minutes, Lindenwood went on the power play after a slashing call on Tampa. It took just 30-seconds for
Gavin Delfosse and
Brock Hart to set up
Nick Jones for the man-advantage goal at 9:46. The Lions had another power play chance about five minutes later, but the Spartans were able to kill it off. Lindenwood then added two goals in the period at even strength. The first came off the blade of
Gage Vierzba at 15:25, assisted by
Finnigan Greeley, his first for the Lions, and
Chase McClellan. Greeley quickly earned his second assist when he fed
Carter Walby for his first score as a Lion at 17:06. Lindenwood carried a 3-0 advantage into the first intermission.
Tampa had a good scoring chance early in the second after Lindenwood was called for slashing just 25 seconds into the period. The Lions killed off most of it but were aided when the Spartans went to the penalty box for the same infraction. After a brief four-on-four, Lindenwood went to the power play and quickly scored when Zach Maupin and Greeley set up Vierzba for his second goal of the game to make it 4-0. About nine minutes later,
Easton Portner earned his first assist as a Lion when he set up
Zachary Schwartz at 11:48 to make it 5-0. With the big margin, tension on the ice grew, erupting in multiple roughing calls on both sides at the 18:40 mark.
While the outcome seemed like a sure thing, Tampa had other ideas in the third. An even-strength goal at 1:12 made it 5-1 and then another at 12:55 made it 5-2. When the third Spartan score came at 15:20, there could have been some concern, but one of their players was given a game misconduct. That seemed to steal some momentum, but it did not cool off the brewing tempers. The Lions were called for charging which added fuel to a fire that erupted at 17:48. Three more Tampa players and two Lions received game misconduct infractions. The final two-plus minutes ran out with fewer players on each bench and without any more scoring.
Lindenwood outshot the University of Tampa 38 to 18 and
Cole Wheaton stopped 15 of the 18 shots he faced to earn the victory in goal. Both teams combined for 88 minutes of penalties but only two power play goals.
With the win, the Lions improved to 5-0 for the season. After a few days off, they will play three games as part of the Maryville Showcase October 23-25. After facing the University of Arkansas at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Lindenwood takes on the host Saints at 5:40 p.m. Friday, followed by the University of Missouri at 3 p.m. Saturday. All three games will be played at the Maryville Ice Center in Chesterfield, Missouri.
