After seeing a 16-game winning streak disappear against Maryville last Sunday, men's ACHA DII ice hockey came with renewed focus in a 10-0 shutout of Trine University Saturday evening at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri. After netting two in the first period, the Lions scored four times in the second and four times in the third.
Zac Maupin started the offensive surge at 9:08 of the first on a play set up by
Gavin Delfosse and
Brett Robinson.
Jack Louko made it 2-0 with 3:47 remaining, assisted by
Gage Vierzba and Robinson.
Nick Jones scored his 27
th goal of the season at 5:40 of the second with help from Louko and
Austin Meers, who picked up his 31
st assist on the play, then
Trent Sylvester made it 4-0 Lindenwood at 12:32. Jones and
Ryan Granville earned the assists.
Chase McClellan sounded the horn from Meers and Jones just 31-seconds later and that was enough for the Thunder coach to make a goalie change, but the Lions continued to pepper the netminder regardless of who was playing. Lindenwood put 23 shots on goal in the second and then sent another 28 shots on net in the third. It took over six minutes of game-time, but Delfosse finally greeted the new goalie with 15-seconds remaining in the period to make it 6-0.
Michael Mullen and Vierzba helped create the first goal of the third for the Lions off the blade of
Zachary Schwartz at the 57-second mark. The second score from Jones made it 8-0 exactly five-minutes later, assisted by Louko and Schwartz. A Lindenwood penalty gave Trine a chance to break the shutout, but Millhausen had other ideas as he stole the puck and passed to McClellan for a short-handed score at the 9:42 mark. Trine was called for cross-checking at 18:17 and that led to the 10
th goal of the contest for the Lions with the man-advantage with 38-seconds remaining. McClellan earned the primary assist, his 28
th of the year, while Vierzba was awarded the secondary assist.
Lindenwood outshot the Thunder by more than a six-to-one margin 69-11.
Cade Kujawski was a perfect 11 for 11 in save chances to earn the victory in goal.
With the win, the Lions improved to 31-3 for the season. They will go for a series sweep as they wrap up the regular season against Trine Sunday afternoon. The puck drops at 2 p.m. at the Centene Community Ice Center.
