After the postponement of their first pool play game, the Lindenwood men's ACHA division II ice hockey team defeated the Northeastern University Huskies in game two by the score of 3-0 Saturday night at the Metro Rec-Plex in O'Fallon, Illinois.
Lindenwood got the scoring started on Saturday night when they jumped ahead at 8:20. At 6:42, Northeastern was called for a high sticking penalty; their first of seven penalties of the contest. While on the man advantage,
Jack Louko scored off a pass from
Michael Mullen to give the Lions a 1-0 lead midway through the first period. The Lions peppered the Husky netminder with 17 shots, but Louko's 13th tally of the season remained the difference maker.
The second period started similarly to the first as the Lions outplayed the Huskies for a majority of the frame. The Lions padded their lead at 13:03 when
Ryan Granville found the back of the net off feeds from
Nolan Kahl and
Zac Maupin. The captain's goal was his first of the postseason and 13th of the year. The Lindenwood defense held Northeastern to seven shots on goal once again, and Lions goaltender
Justin Grenon, held the Huskies off the scoreboard. The Lions notched 13 shots on goal of their own in the second period.
Stanley Lucas, who boasts the second most goals of any Lion in 2024, put the game on ice with a goal at 19:18. Assisted by
Austin Meers and
Logan Millhausen, Lucas' goal was his 19th of the year. The Lions put 17 pucks on net in the third period to the Huskies six, and Grenon remained stellar between the pipes as he held the Huskies scoreless.
The Lions outshot the Huskies 47 to 20. Grenon played great on Saturday night and recorded a shutout in game two of the ACHA division II playoffs. Grenon was a perfect 20 for 20 in saves against the Huskies and improved his season save percentage to .915. Grenon's season record now sits at 11-0-0 with one shutout loss.
Friday's contest against the Indiana Hoosiers was suspended after the first period due to inclement weather. The game will resume Monday, March 17, with the start of the second period and the game tied 1-1. Lindenwood ACHA men's hockey will be back in action for game three of the ACHA DII National Championship Tournament on Sunday when they square off against the Utah Utes. Puck drop is scheduled for 5 p.m. from Centene Community Ice Center.
