Magic Number Down to Two; Lions Defeat Hoosiers to Advance to National Championship Semifinals

The Lindenwood ACHA Division II ice hockey team picked up its biggest win of the year on Monday afternoon as they defeated the reigning Division II National Champions, the Indiana Hoosiers, by the score of 4-1 at Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri. With the victory, the Lions secure their spot in the ACHA Division II National Championship Tournament semifinal starting on Tuesday.

The first period, which was completed on March 14 prior to the postponement, started with the Lions getting the first tally of the game. Nick Jones scored the Lions goal at 6:25 and was assisted by Chase McClellan. The Hoosiers responded soon after when McClellan was sent to the penalty box for tripping at 8:57. Indiana scored midway through the man-advantage and tied the game one goal apiece at 10:17. The Lions outshot the Hoosiers 17-9 when play was halted.

When play resumed on Monday, the teams were more evenly matched. Indiana was able to outshoot the Lions in the second period 12-11, the first time Lindenwood was outshot in a period this postseason. Although outshot, the Lions were able to score the period's only goal at 7:44 thanks to Stanley Lucas. Lucas' third goal of the playoffs came while on the power play thanks to feeds from Jones and Brett Robinson. Lucas' goal put the Lions up 2-1 and his goal would go on to be the eventual game winner on Monday.

After a shaky second period, the Lions responded with vengeance in the third period as they peppered the Indiana netminder with 16 shots to the Hoosiers seven. Logan Millhausen had himself a nice third period as he picked up a huge insurance goal for the Lions at 17:07. The goal, assisted by Michael Mullen, was Millhausen's first of the playoffs and gave the Lions a two-goal lead with less than three minutes to play. Millhausen added an empty netter with 35 seconds remaining, giving the Lions a 4-1 lead when the final horn sounded.

After allowing a first period power play goal, Lions goaltender, Cole Wheaton slammed the door shut on Indiana. Wheaton stopped 27 of 28 shots against the Hoosiers including all 19 faced after play resumed. The Lindenwood power play also continued to click on Monday as they converted on two of three opportunities.

Finishing 3-0 in pool play action following their victory over the Hoosiers, the Lions have secured a Final Four date with a familiar foe, the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles. With a birth in the National Championship on the line, the Lions will seek revenge over the Eagles as they were one of the three teams to hand Lindenwood a loss this season. The Lions need just two more wins to claim the title as ACHA Division II National Champions. Tuesday's semifinal matchup will start at 4 p.m. from Centene Community Ice Center.
