Lindenwood Men's Rugby is proud to announce
David Scanlon as team captain for the 2025 season, the latest in a distinguished line of Lions leaders selected by Head Coach
Josh Macy.
Standing at 6'4" and 250 lbs, Scanlon is a commanding presence at lock. A recent All-American and participant in the prestigious East-West Collegiate All-American Game, he is quickly leaving his mark on collegiate rugby in America. Originally from Waterford, Ireland, and a graduate of St. Declan's Community College, Scanlon has earned the respect of teammates and coaches alike through his work ethic, poise, and consistent example.
He now takes up the mantle from a lineage of outstanding Lions captains chosen by Coach Macy back to 2016—Jack Huckstepp, Wesley White, Marnus Spangenberg, Neal Moylett, and
Duncan Krige. Each led in their own way, but they all gave everything to the program. Macy believes Scanlon is ready to do the same.
"Over the past two years, I've learned a lot from this team's previous leaders," Scanlon said. "
Duncan Krige helped me out a lot with finding my voice in this team, especially being one of the younger boys coming in. This is very much a team built off culture, and a lot of older boys and alumni have helped me understand how to maintain and uphold that going into next year."
Known for leading by example, Scanlon embraces the responsibilities of captaincy without needing to change who he is. "I think the role of a captain is to set the standards of a team and to uphold those standards every day—that goes for training, match days, and even days off."
His first task as captain will be to identify a core leadership group to support him in various functions of the team—attack, defense, lineout, standards, and more. "All I ask is for 100% of your effort and attention when we wear the Lindenwood crest," he said. "Always be looking to improve and get even just 1% better every day. And most importantly, enjoy our time together. It might seem like a long road ahead, but these years will go by quickly—cherish every moment of it."
Coach Macy commented, "Each of our captains has brought something different, but the one constant is complete commitment to the team. David lives that out. He's the right leader at the right time."
