Men's ACHA DII ice hockey completed a two-game series sweep with a 3-1 win over Miami (Ohio) University Saturday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
As was the case on Friday, the Lions had to come from behind again after the Redhawks scored in the early moments of the opening period at the 2:33 mark, but the 1-0 deficit did not last long. Miami was called for hooking at 5:45 and Lindenwood capitalized on the ensuing power play when
Brock Hart scored after being set up by
Gavin Delfosse and
Jack Louko at 6:27.
The contest remained knotted at 1-1 through the rest of the first and most of the second. With just 56 seconds remaining, a
Carter Walby pass found the blade of Delfosse who buried it for a 2-1 lead. The Lions had a chance to add to their advantage moments later when the Redhawks were called for hooking, but a roughing call against Lindenwood at the end of the period nullified the man-advantage chance.
The two teams skated four-on-four in the opening moments of the third and then Miami had a brief power play, but nothing came of it. The Lions appeared to draw another penalty on the Redhawks for cross checking at the 9:10 mark, but Lindenwood was called for embellishment on the same play, resulting in another four-on-four.
Miami continued efforts to get an equalizing goal, but the Redhawks gave the Lions two more power plays, for holding at 11:32 and for hooking at 15:16. Lindenwood couldn't take advantage of the first of them and the second was nullified by a Lions tripping penalty at 15:56, resulting in a brief power play for Miami after the four-on-four play expired. Despite multiple shots on goal, Lindenwood kept the Redhawks at bay.
As the clock ticked past the 18:01 mark, Miami pulled its goalie for the extra attacker. After several seconds of zone time for the Redhawks, Hart took possession of the puck and sent it to the back of the empty net for his 17
th goal of the season at 18:41. Now trailing by two, the goaltender for Miami returned to the net and the final moments of regulation expired.
Both teams fired 32 shots on goal with the Lions having a 15-14 advantage in the first and a 14-7 advantage in the third, while the Redhawks had an 11-3 advantage in the second.
Justin Grenon stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced to earn the victory in net. Lindenwood scored once on five power plays while holding Miami scoreless on three man-advantage chances.
With the win, the Lions improved to 21-0 on the season. They will put that streak on the line when they host the University of Arkansas on January 15 at 7:10 p.m. at the Centene Community Ice Center. Lindenwood will then travel down the road to face Maryville on January 18 with a puck drop at 2:30 p.m. at the Maryville Ice Center in Chesterfield, Missouri.
