Men's Basketball Returns Home to Take on William Woods

Lindenwood Notes

• The Lions enter tonight's game with a record of 3-0. Lindenwood is coming off a 89-84 overtime victory over the Illinois-Springfield Prairie Stars.  

• The William Woods Owls come calling to the Hyland Arena for this NCAA vs. NAIA match up. The Owls play in the NAIA and the AMC.  

• The Owls come into today's game with a record of 3-5. The team is coming off a win at home against Central Bible 75-66.

• Tonight's game will be just the third time these two teams have met. The Lions have won the previous two meetings which both occurred in 2007-08.

• The game will be the first contest of the season against a NAIA.

• Last season, Lindenwood averaged over 85 points a game which was the most in school history. This season the Lions started off the first three games scoring 87.3 points.  

• The offense from a year ago was so potent that it scored over 80 points 22 out of 31 games. The team was 20-2 in those games. Already this season, the Lions have scored over 80 in all three of the wins.  

• Since the Lions are in a provisional season the team is not allowed in the Division II statistical leaders. But if the team was able, it would be ranked third in the country in points per game.

• Dating back to last season Lindenwood has a current nine game home winning streak, and a seven game overall win streak.

• This season's roster consists of five seniors and those seniors are leading the way. The five seniors are scoring 64 percent of the team's average points per game.

• Lindenwood has done a good job spreading the scoring around this season. The Lions have four separate guys averaging double figures.

• Senior point guard Alex Bazzell is creeping up the career lists at Lindenwood. He is just 77 points away from being the ninth player in school history to score 1,000 points. He is third in free throws made, third in assists, and second in free throw percentage.

• Senior forward Richie Thompson has been dominating the glass in the early season. Thompson  has grabbed 32 rebounds in the first three games.  He has grabbed a total of 18.2 percent of the possible rebounds while he is on the court.

• Freshman guard Brandon Marquardt is making an early impact in his first season of college basketball. Through two games he is averaging 6.3 points and is  4-for-6 from behind the three point line.

• Through two games this season Lindenwood is absolutely dominating the glass. The team is averaging 50 rebounds a game compared to its opponents 31 and has won the rebound battle in both games.  

• After three games, the Lions have shot 43 more free throws than their opponents. Lindenwood is shooting 71 percent from the field and opponents are shooting 72 percent.  

• Defense has been the name of the game in the early season. The Lions are holding their opponents to just 34 percent shooting from the field. Opponents are scoring just 63.7 points a game.

• After starting the season off a little slow, junior Tyler Ressel turned it on against Illinois-Springfield. Ressel scored 23 points in the win. He was five-of-nine from behind the three-point line and eight-of-14 from the field.

Brett Thompson is making his return to the court in 2012-13. After red shirting in 2011-12 due to a knee injury he is back in the Lions lineup. In his two seasons of playing on the court for Lindenwood he is averaging 9.8 points and over six rebounds. In his first three games, Thompson is scoring 13.3 points and grabbing 4.7 rebounds. He has scored in double figures in two of his first three games.  

• After playing a season without a conference the Lions will play this year in the MIAA. Lindenwood will play 18 conference games.

• The Hyland Arena floor has been very good to the Lions since Brad Soderberg took over. In his first four seasons, Lindenwood is 42-5 at home.  

• For the first time in school history the Lions have had three consecutive 20 win seasons. All three seasons have been under the watchful eye of Coach Soderberg.

• The Lions return seven of their top eight scorers from last season's squad. The only loss was Kramer Soderberg who averaged 17.9 points. 

William Woods Notes

• The William Woods Owls are an NAIA school that plays their games in the AMC. The team enters the contest against the Lions with a record of 3-5. The Owls have won their last two games after losing five in a row before that.

• As a team William Woods is averaging 68.1 points a game on offense and are giving up 70.9 on defense. The Owls are shooting 42 percent from the field, 34 percent from behind the three-point line, and 63 percent from the free-throw line.

• Logan Decker is leading the team in scoring with 13.4 points a game. D.J. Hoskins is second on the squad with an average of 13.1 points. Blake Burgess leads the team in rebounds with 6.0 a night.

• Nick Totta is the head coach of William Woods and is in his third season at the helm.
