The Lindenwood men's basketball team could not overcome a cold shooting night against No. 24 Washburn Ichabods on Saturday afternoon at Hyland Arena. The Lions' furious second-half comeback fell short by a score of 66-63.
After trailing by six points at halftime, Lindenwood saw the deficit grow to as many as 13 points in the second half. However, the Lions used tight defense and transition offense to rally late in the game. A pair of
Alex Bazzell free-throws cut Washburn's lead to two points with 13 seconds left in regulation, but Lindenwood couldn't quite get over the hump. Washburn hit free throws down the stretch to thwart the Lions comeback.
Lindenwood got into an early hole partly due to a rough shooting night. They shot just 37 percent from the field and 17 percent from 3-point range. The Lions were also outrebounded 40-36 in the game.
Cody Sorenson helped lead the comeback attempt by pouring in a team-high 14 points while collecting a team-high nine rebounds.
Darris Smith added 13 points.
Richie Thompson and
Alex Bazzell both scored in double-digits with 12 points apiece.
Lindenwood falls to 12-5 on the season and 5-4 in the MIAA. Their next game is Thursday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. in Bolivar, Mo. when they take on Southwest Baptist.
