Lions Win Home Opener For Seventh Straight Season

Box Score The Lindenwood men's basketball team snapped a three-game losing skid on Wednesday night in St. Charles, Mo. The Lions led from the opening tip of the contest and cruised to an 87-60 win over Westminster.

Lindenwood started off the game shooting the ball well. The Lions opened the contest on a 26-9 run and made their first nine-of-11 shots. Lindenwood continued to extend the lead and got it up to as many as 25. Westminster closed the half on a 10-4 run to cut the Lions lead to 19.

In the opening half, Lindenwood shot 63 percent from the field and 53 percent from behind the arc.

"I think it was exactly what we needed and particular that we made the open shots," head coach Brad Soderberg said. "Tonight we got back to what we did the last four years and getting up and down the court and getting open shots. The key thing was, we made them and that is exactly what our guys needed."

The start of the second half was not as kind to the Lions. After the Lindenwood pushed the lead to 21, Westminster started to slowly claw away at its deficit. The Blue Jays would get within 14 with 12:55 to go in the game. Unfortunately, for the visitors that was as close as they would get.

The Lions would close the game on a 23-10 run and win its home opener for the seventh straight season.

"The most obvious thing was we badly needed to win," Soderberg said.  "I thought we did some excellent things on offense and we only turned it over five times. That is a great night. We shot the ball from the three-point line like we will have to this year. All in all it was much needed medicine for this team right now."

Lindenwood had four double digits scorers on the night led by Tyler Ressel's 19. Garret Reeg scored 17 points and led the team in rebounds with eight. Darris Smith and Brandon Marquardt each scored 14. Smith also tied his career-high with seven assists.

The Lions shot 51 percent from the field and 46 percent from behind the three-point line. Lindenwood dominated the glass outrebounding the Blue Jays 35-29.

The win was Coach Soderberg's 100th as the head coach of the Lions and is the first time any men's basketball coach has won 100 games.

Lindenwood improves its record to 1-3 and will be back in action Saturday night against Quincy in Hyland Arena.
