Box Score The Lindenwood men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker on Monday night 114-112 in double overtime to the visiting Missouri S&T Miners in St. Charles. Senior
Tyler Ressel scored a career-high 41 points in the loss for the Lions.
From the opening tip of the game it was a back-and-forth affair. In the first 20 minutes, there were eight lead changes and three ties. The Lions had the lead up to as many as 10 in the half but the Miners would hold the lead by three heading into the locker room.
Not much changed in the second half with the two teams trading punches all the way to the buzzer. The Miners started the half quickly and pushed the lead to 11 with over 13 minutes to play. Next, was Lindenwood's turn to throw a punch. The Lions went on a 23-7 run to take a five-point advantage. But that lead was quickly erased after the Miners scored the next five points to tie the game up for the eighth time.
Over the next five minutes, the teams traded the lead three times and eventually the game would be tied with one minute to go. The Miners then took a two point advantage with 31 seconds remaining in regulation after two free throws.
Trailing by two Ressel was fouled going to the basket with 13 seconds remaining. The senior made just one-of-two free throws and the Lions stilled trailed by one. Lindenwood would foul the Miners sending them to the free-throw line to try and push the lead to three. Mudi Eruteya made just one of two free throws and the Lions still had a glimmer of hope.
It was up to Ressel once again as he drove to the basket was fouled, made the shot to tie up the score and had a chance to put the Lions up one after a free throw with just two second to go. Ressel's free throw went in and out and the game headed into overtime.
The first extra frame started with Ressel making two free throws to give the home team the two-point advantage. Nusrath Khan would hit back-to-back three pointers for the Miners and give them a four-point lead.
Darris Smith came back and scored a layup to the cut the deficit to two with 1:37 remaining in the first overtime.
Lindenwood was then unable to get a stop on defense and trailed by four with 1:03 to go. Ressel was then fouled with 40 second to play and promptly hit both to get the Lions within two. Now with 29 seconds to go Missouri S&T would miss two free throws to give the Lions another chance.
After the second missed free throw,
Brandon Marquardt grabbed the rebound for the Lions and handed off to Ressel who went streaking down the court. As Ressel entered the lane he dumped off a pass to
Marcus Hinton who made a reverse dunk with 15 seconds left to tie the score and send the game into double overtime.
The Miners grabbed the advantage first in the second overtime after making four straight free throws. Smith would answer for the Lions hitting his only three-pointer of the night to cut the visitor's lead down to one.
The Lions would tie the score up with 1:09 to play in double overtime but Eruteya hit a tough layup in traffic to give Missouri S&T another lead with just 50 seconds to play. On the ensuing possession for Lindenwood,
Michael Boos was fouled but hit just one of two free throws and the Lions still trailed by one.
Lindenwood was then forced to foul quickly which sent Eruteya to the line for the visitors. He made both free throws and the Lions trailed by three. Lindenwood elected to get a quick basket as Smith drove to the basket and cut the deficit down to one with 20 seconds left. And just like the previous possession Eruteya was fouled and headed back to the charity stripe. He would hit one of two this trip and the Lions would have one more shot.
Boos would take a pass in the corner, drive to the basket and his layup went down and then back out as the clock tantalizingly rolled to all zeroes.
For the game, the lead would change hands a total of 16 times and was tied 15 times. The teams combined for 91 free throw attempts and 100 rebounds. A total of eight players from both teams fouled as well.
Ressel scored a game-high 41 points which is the second-highest total in school history. He was just three-points behind Brandon Braswell and Earl Austin who each scored 44 points in a game. The 40 point game was the first for the Lions since Justin Shrake scored 40 in 2004. The senior from Washington, Mo. also set the school record for free-throw attempts in a game with 24 and tied the school record with 21 made free throws.
Smith was second on the team with 21 points while Marquardt scored 17. Boos and Hinton came off the bench and scored 11 and 10 respectively. Hinton recorded his first double-double of his career after he added 10 rebounds to his 10 points.
Lindenwood shot 44 percent from the field, 42 percent from the three-point line, and 82 percent from the charity strip. The 45 free throw attempts for the Lions was the second most in school history. The Miners won the rebounding battle 53-47 including a 22-14 margin on the offensive glass.
The loss drops Lindenwood to 6-6 on the season. Lindenwood will now embark on the road for its first road games of the season against Nebraska-Kearney and Washburn.
