Lindenwood Drops First Match To Grand Canyon In Four Sets

Box Score The Lindenwood men's volleyball team fell in four on Thursday evening to Grand Canyon in a conference match. The Lions fell by scores of 23-25, 25-23, 25-20, and 31-29.
 
The Lions jumped out to a quick 7-1 start over the Antelopes in the first set. Lindenwood held the momentum through the middle of the set until Grand Canyon answered with four straight points to tie the set up at 15-all. As soon as the Lions would start to pull away, Grand Canyon would answer back. A service error and an attack error by the Antelopes handed Lindenwood the first set.
 
The second set was much like the first by way of Lindenwood jumping out to a quick and solid lead. The six-point lead at 11-5 would prove to be the largest lead of the set for Lindenwood as Grand Canyon battled back to take over the final lead at 16-15. The Lions were held to just a .150 hitting percentage in the second set.
 
Both squads battled back-and-forth through the start and the middle of the third set, forcing 12 ties in the time span. At a 20-all tie, the Antelopes finished off Lindenwood by rattling off five-straight.
 
Set four proved to be the marathon set of the evening, as Lindenwood had to battle off four set points before a service error by Michael Adams and a kill by Grand Canyon's Ben Ponnet ended the set at 31-29. The fourth set was the best attacking set of the evening for the Lions, as they produced a .258 hitting clip compared to a .256 mark by the Antelopes.
 
Colin Hackworth led the Lions with 13 kills while Kyle Overby added nine. Scott Siwicki, the conference leader in hitting percentage, recorded six kills with just one error on 10 attempts. David Poole led all players on the floor with 16 digs.
 
The Lions outblocked Grand Canyon 13.5 to 11 in the match. Lindenwood also recorded just 12 service errors compared to 22 by the Antelopes.
 
Ben Ponnet and Jordon Tarantino of Grand Canyon recorded 23 and 22 kills, respectively.
 
Lindenwood falls to 19-11 overall and 5-8 in the MIVA conference. The Lions will take Friday off before concluding the 2013 season on Saturday in its second match against Grand Canyon. First serve in Phoenix, Ariz. is scheduled for 8 p.m. central time.
