Men's rugby hadn't lost a game all season, but the Lions met their match in a 41-0 defeat at the hands of the Life University Men's Club Sunday afternoon at the Lindenwood track.
Despite an inability to get any offense going, the Lions stood strong on defense for most of the first half, only allowing one try from Life in the first 30-plus minutes, but after some broken play, Life touched down for the second time and then added a penalty kick a few minutes later to take a 17-0 lead into halftime.
Lindenwood attempted to counter the size and pace that was faced in the second half, but Life was able to wear down the Lions and capitalized with four more scores before the final whistle sounded in the match.
After a weekend off, Lindenwood will host Davenport University at the Lindenwood track October 25. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in St. Charles, Mo.
Earlier in the week, Lions captain and senior Michael Gierlach was named the USA Rugby Player of the Week. Gierlach played a key role in the 24-15 win for Lindenwood against the Glendale Men's Club, scoring one try and making several important defensive stops for the team.
