Men’s Rugby Honors 2025-26 Team Award Winners

With the conclusion of the 2025-26 season, men's rugby recognized the individuals who defined the year through performance, growth, leadership, and impact on the program. Voted on by the team, these awards reflect the standards and culture that continue to drive the Lions forward.

Newcomer of the Year: Jago Birley (Full Back; Auckland, New Zealand)
Birley made an immediate impact in his first season, stepping into the program and contributing at a high level right away. His ability to adapt quickly to the physical and tactical demands of collegiate rugby set him apart among first-year players.
Honorable Mention: Caleb Murphy

Freshman of the Year: Tom Bishop (No. 8; Sussex, England)
Bishop's freshman campaign was defined by physicality and influence in key moments, establishing himself as a difference-maker early in his career.
Honorable Mention: Jack Thory

Breakout Player of the Year: Caleb Murphy (Flanker; Dededo, Guam)
After getting his bearings in the fall, Murphy became a force to be reckoned with in the spring. A testament to his growth and ability to elevate his game over the course of the season. His development into a consistent contributor reflects both work ethic and opportunity seized.
Honorable Mention: JD Martin / Jayden Bartels

Most Improved Player: Aiden Kalmar (Center; Bixby, Oklahoma)
Kalmar's progression throughout the year stood out to his teammates, showing significant development in as he added skill and intelligence to an already impressive physical set of tools.
Honorable Mention: Max Orefice

Most Valuable Forward: Luke Schaefer (Prop; Peoria, Illinois)
Schaefer anchored the forward pack with consistent physicality, work rate, and presence in the contact area. He went far beyond most tight heads in both minutes and involvements.
Honorable Mention: Mark Barbour

Most Valuable Back: Byron Forword (Fly Half; Port Elizabeth, Republic of South Africa)
Forword's season at the back was marked by control, composure, and the ability to influence games through both attack and kicking. His recognition reflects a player who consistently delivered when it mattered most.
Honorable Mention: Jack McAllister

LEO Award: Mark Barbour (Hooker; Kansas City, Missouri)
The LEO Award, representing the best overall Lindenwood Lion Student, goes to Mark Barbour whose service to the team, and presence on campus is a top tier example to follow.
Honorable Mention: Ike Wrigley

Midnight Rider: Dylan Scruggs (Wing; St. Paul, Missouri)
Something goes wrong at midnight. What teammate do you call? Scruggs is there for everyone and proud to look after the Lions while growing into a solid attacking threat.
Honorable Mention: Gavin Richards

Challenger Award: Riley Richardson-Mould (Flanker; Kaukapakapa, New Zealand)
The Challenger Award highlights a player who pushes standards and drives competition within the squad. Richardson-Mould's edge and intensity helped elevate those around him throughout the season.
Honorable Mention: Zack McCartney

Players' Player: Max Orefice (Flanker; Brentwood, Tennessee)
Voted on by teammates across the entire season, the Players' Player Award is often the most meaningful. Orefice earned the respect of the locker room through his consistency, attitude, and intensity across the season, embodying what it means to be a Lion.
Honorable Mention: Nayan Sirwani

This year's award winners represent more than individual success. They reflect a program built on development, accountability, and shared standards. From first-year standouts to veteran leaders, the 2025–26 Lions showed the depth and culture that continue to define Lindenwood rugby.
